Who do men say I am?
Divided opinions
John 7:12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”
Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”
John 10:19-21 At these words the Jews were
again divided. Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?”
But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”
John 7:14-15 Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.
The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having studied?”
John 7:40-43 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”
Others said, “He is the Christ.”
Still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee? Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David’s family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”
Thus the people were divided because of Jesus.

Who do men say I am?
Matt 16:13-14 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
Who do you say I am?
HIS DISCIPLES
Matt 16:15-16 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
John 6:66-69 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
“You do not want to leave too,
do you?” Jesus asked the
Twelve. Simon Peter answered
him, “Lord,to whom shall we
go? You have the words of
eternal life. We believe and
know that you are the Holy
One of God.”
Simon Peter
John 1:40-41 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found
the Messiah”
(that is, the
Christ).
Andrew
John 1:43-45 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
Philip
John 1:46-49 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.
“Come and see,” said Philip.
When Jesus saw Nathanael
approaching, he said of him,
“Here is a true Israelite, in
whom there is nothing false.”
“How do you know me?”
Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, “I saw you
while you were still under the
fig tree before Philip called you.”
Then Nathanael declared,
“Rabbi, you are the Son of God;
you are the King of Israel.”
Nathanael
John 20:24-28 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and
stood among them and said,
“Peace be with you!” Then he
said to Thomas, “Put your
finger here; see my hands.
Reach out your hand and put
it into my side. Stop doubting
and believe.”
Thomas said to him,
“My Lord and my God!”

CREATOR
John 1:3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing
was made that has
been made.
John 1:10 He was in
the world, and though
the world was made
through him, the world
did not recognize him.
PRE-EXISTANT
John 1:2 He was with

MEDIATOR OF THE NEW
COVENANT
John 1:16-17 From the
fullness of his grace we have
all received one blessing after
another. For the law was given
through Moses; grace and truth
came through Jesus Christ.
AUTHORITY TO MAKE US CHILDREN OF GOD
John 1:12-13 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
John
GOD IN FLESH
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 The Word became
flesh and made his dwelling
among us. We have seen his
glory, the glory of the One
and Only, who came from
the Father, full of grace
and truth.
John 1: 18 No one has ever
seen God, but God the One
and Only, who is at the
Father’s side, has made him
known.

HIS FAMILY & FRIENDS
WORTHY TO BE OBEYED UNCONDITIONALLY
John 2:5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Mary, his mother
John 11:21-27 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection
and the life. He who believes in me will
live, even though he dies; and whoever
lives and believes in me will never die.
Do you believe this?”
“Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe
that you are the Christ, the Son of
God, who was to come into the world.”

THE CROWDS HE
MINISTERED TO
John 6:14-15 After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
Feeding of 5000
John 12:12-13 The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
They took palm branches and
went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the King of Israel!”
The Triumphal Entry
John 9:17 Finally they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied,
“He is a prophet.”
The Man Born Blind
John 9: 24-27 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”
He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?”
The Man Born Blind
John 9: 28-33 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”
The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
The Man Born Blind
THE ANGELS & GOD
The angel Gabriel
Luke 1:31-35 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father
David, and he will reign over
the house of Jacob forever;
his kingdom will never end.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked
the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered, “The Holy
Spirit will come upon you, and the
power of the Most High will over-
shadow you. So the holy one to be
born will be called the Son of God.
The angels
Luke 2:10-11 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David
a Savior has been
born to you; he
is Christ the Lord.
God the Father
Luke 3:21-22 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice
came from heaven:
“You are my Son,
whom I love; with
you I am well
pleased.”
HIS FORMER ENEMIES
John 4:9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for
a drink?”
(For Jews do
not associate
with
Samaritans.)
Samaritan woman
John 4:17-19 Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.
John 4:28-29 Then,
leaving her water jar,
the woman went back
to the town and said
to the people, “Come,
see a man who told me
everything I ever did.
Could this be the Christ?”
Samaritan woman
John 4:39-42 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers.
They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
Village of Sychar
Luke 23:40-42 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
The thief on the cross
John 3:1-2 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
Nicodemus
Acts 17:2-3 As his custom was,
Paul went into the synagogue,
and on three Sabbath days he
reasoned with them from the
Scriptures, explaining and
proving that the Christ had to
suffer and rise from the dead.
“This Jesus I am proclaiming to
you is the Christ,” he said.

HIS ENEMIES
John 7:45-46 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards declared.
The temple guards
Matthew 27:54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

Matt 27:3-4 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
Judas Iscariot
John 18:38-39 “What is truth?” Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.”
John 19:4-6 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”
When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!” As soon as the chief priests
and their officials saw him,
they shouted, “Crucify!
Crucify!” But Pilate answered,
“You take him and crucify him.
As for me, I find no basis
for a charge against him.”
Pilate – no basis for a charge
John 19:14-15 “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”
“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
John 19:19-22 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS ...
The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”
Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the
really foolish thing that people often say about
Him: "I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great
moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to
be God." That is the one thing we must not say.
A man who was merely a man and said the sort
of things Jesus said would not be a great moral
teacher. He would either be a lunatic on a level
with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

HIS FORE-RUNNER
John 1:6-8 There came a man who
was sent from God; his name was
John. He came as a witness to
testify concerning that light, so
that through him all men might
believe. He himself was not the
light; he came only as a witness
to the light.
PRE-EXISTANT
John 1:15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”

THE MESSIAH – CHRIST – ANOINTED ONE
John 3:26-30 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified about—well, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”
To this John replied, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him.’ The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater; I must become less.
John the Baptist
THE SON OF GOD
John 1:32-34 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.”
John the Baptist
GOD
John 1:22-23 Finally they said,
“Who are you? Give us an
answer to take back to those
who sent us. What do you say
about yourself?”
John replied in the words of
Isaiah the prophet, “I am the
voice of one calling in the
desert, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”

ATONEMENT FOR SIN
John 1:26-29 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” ...The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
