Sermon synopsis: The Bible consists of 66 individual books, 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. The books are each divided into chapters (1,189 chapters altogether). The Quran contains 114 Suras (chapters) each referred to by either its sequential number or by its unique name. The Quran (about 78,000 words) is about ten times shorter than the Bible (about 780,000 words). The Bible with some 40 authors, mainly Jewish, was written over a period of the middle 2,000 years of human history. The compilation of the written Quran (as opposed to the recited Quran) spanned several decades. It was a record of the revelations Muhammad received over the course of 23 years in the 7th Century AD. After Muhammad’s death it was codified into a single written Arabic version.
