The topic of the tongue is something that Gavin and I have ministered on before.
However it has been on my heart a lot recently, so I am using some of Gavin's slides as well, and talking about it again.
I HAVE BEEN TO THE STOREROOM AND I HAVE HAD NEW INSIGHTS AS WELL
We need reminding.
THE POWER OF THE TONGUE.
Jeremiah 9:8.
Their tongue is a deadly arrow.
THE WORD TONGUE IS MENTIONED 93 TIMES IN THE BIBLE, OFTEN REFERRING TO ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER.
THE POWER OF THE TONGUE.
James 3:5.
Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
In Australia people are encouraged to report Tossers I.e.: people who throw cigarettes out the window of their car as they can cause forest fires which cause massive devastation and even loss of lives.
James 3:3-5.
When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal
Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the
body, but it makes great boasts. Consider
what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
THE POWER OF THE TONGUE.
MATTHEW 4:1-2.
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.
Jesus answered, It is written Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
God's word is our sword against Satan
GOD IS THE CREATOR AND HE DETERMINES OUR COURSE.
Some strange and false teachings have emerged in the modern-day church as people want to use God’s Word to escape difficulty and testing and try create their own reality of comfort and luxury and ease.
Lamentations 3:37.
Nobody can speak and have it happen unless the
Lord commands it.
WE DON’T HOLD TO THE DOCTRINE OF POSITIVE CONFESSION WHICH STATES THAT WE CAN CREATE OUR OWN REALITY
EPHESIANS 6:17
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
EPHESIANS 6:10-13.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
IT IS NO GOOD IF YOU USE THE WORD OF GOD, BUT YOU DON’T HAVE THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND THE BELT OF TRUTH AND THE SHIELD OF FAITH ETC.
I have heard godless people quoting scripture.
Daniel 3:17-19.
If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king, but even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.
(If these 3 men had been taught in some of our modern-day churches, they would have been binding the Devil and pleading the blood or trying some other spiritual lucky charm.)
MATTHEW 16:16-17.
Simon Peter answered, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
Jesus replied, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
MATTHEW 16:22-23.
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. Never, Lord! he said.
“This shall never happen to you!
Jesus turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.
Satan used Peter to try stop Jesus from going to the cross.
1 Samuel 17:8-11.
Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” Then the Philistine said, “This day I defy the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other. On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.
1 Samuel 17:45.
David said to the Philistine, you come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
You need to be living in submission to the Lord to have authority against Satan.
Acts 19:13-17.
Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honour.
YOU NEED TO BE LIVING IN SUBMISSION TO THE LORD TO HAVE AUTHORITY AGAINST SATAN
Proverbs 5:2-5.
My son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ear to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge.
For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end, she is bitter as gall,
sharp as a double-edged sword.
Her feet go down to death.
1 Kings 19:1-3.
Ahab told his wife Jezebel what Elijah had done and that he had killed the prophets. She sent a message to Elijah: You killed my prophets. Now I'm going to kill you! I pray that the gods will punish me even more severely if I don't do it by this time tomorrow. Elijah was afraid when he got her message, and he ran to the town of Beersheba in Judah. He left his servant there.
James 3:4
Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.
GAVIN PAYNTER
DURING WORLD WAR 2 THIS BECAME A COMMONLY USED PHRASE TO TRY TO SAVE LIVES OF THOSE CROSSING THE OCEANS BY SHIP,
In world war 2 there was a major campaign to try to stop loose talk that could be overheard by spies and help the enemy to target ships with their U-boats.
During World War II, poster competitions were held to solicit designs, under particular themes,
to assist in the war effort. This poster, designed
by Frederick Siebel, was submitted to alert Americans to the urgency of national security.
For this contest each poster was subject to
the scrutiny of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt,
who acted as a judge. Siebel’s poster addressed
the recent sinking of numerous ships off the
U.S. coast. It was believed that spies had overheard open discussion of naval strategy
by military personnel, which caused the tragic destruction of American military vessels and the needless deaths of American soldiers.
Siebel’s poster was chosen to be widely distributed
DURING WORLD WAR 2 THIS BECAME A COMMONLY USED PHRASE TO TRY TO SAVE LIVES OF THOSE CROSSING THE OCEANS BY SHIP
THERE ARE CHURCHES THAT HAVE SPLIT AND EVEN BEEN DESTROYED
BECAUSE SOMEONE TALKED
LOOSE TALK ALSO SINKS CHURCHES
Proverbs 18:21.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue and they that love it will eat the fruit thereof.
With our tongues we can break churches down and build churches up.
We can influence and encourage and edify people.
The choice is ours.
To do good and build! Or destroy and break down!
Ephesians 4:29.
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Proverbs 18:21 says “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” The tongue can be used as a weapon to harm and destroy or as a tool to build and heal. What kind of impact do your words have?
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Maybe you’ve said it, but do you believe it? Someone revised this into, “Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.”
Our newspaper carried the tragic story of a teenaged girl who began an online relationship with an admirer in a cyberspace chat room. The boyfriend, who was really her neighbour posing as someone else, broke up with her and wrote that the world would be a better place without her. The girl read those words and killed herself.
When has an acid tongue burned you? Or kind words refreshed your soul? We’ve all wished we could retract a thoughtless jab or had the perfect word to say at the right time. The Bible tells us the types of words that bless and curse.
John Gills Commentary explains it this way: "death and life are in the power of the tongue" - of witnesses, according to the testimony they bear; of judges, according to the sentence they pass; of teachers, according to the doctrine they preach; of all men, who, by their well or ill speaking, bring death or life to themselves and others. Some, by their tongues, by the too free use of them, or falsehood they utter, are the cause of death to themselves and others; and some, by their silence, or by their prudent speech and prevalent intercession, secure or obtain life for themselves and others; yea, judgment at the last day will proceed according to a man's words, "By thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned", (Matthew 12:37); the tongue is the instrument either of a great deal of good, or of a great deal of evil.
As Gavin has mentioned in ministry recently, Satan the enemy of our souls has been sowing a counterfeit seed in the church which has resulted in tares growing among the wheat. he does this through teachers who preach false doctrine.
SATAN USED SCRIPTURE TO TRY TO TRAP JESUS AND HIS TACTIC IS THE SAME FOR JESUS DISCIPLES HE USES FALSE PROPHETS WITH FALSE TEACHINGS

1 TIMOTHY4:1. Now the Spirit says clearly that in the last times some people will abandon the faith by following deceitful spirits, the teachings of demons .
TEACHERS WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR TEACHING.
1 TIMOTHY 4:1.
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
JAMES 3:1.
Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
Teachers need to have good doctrine.
THIS IS WHY WE STARTED THE BIBLE COLLEGE.
SO, FOLKS LET US GO INTO THIS NEW WEEK AND

NEXT WEEK WE LOOK AT THE POISON OF THE TONGUE
ISAIAH 6:1-5.
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook, and the temple was filled with smoke.
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
