SERMON TOPIC: The Passover

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 31 March 2019

Sermon synopsis: The Passover lamb was a type of Jesus:

1 Cor 5:7 For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

SERMON TOPIC: Shadows

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 17 March 2019

Topic Groups: SHADOWS, TYPOLOGY, NEW COVENANT

Sermon synopsis: The Old Testament (Covenant) contains shadows – the New Testament has the realities:

Heb 10:1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves.

Col 3:16-17 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

Let us consider some of the types or shadows of Jesus found in the OT.

SERMON TOPIC: A NO WAY INTO A HIGHWAY

Speaker: Richard Bandawo

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 29 October 2017

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY, NEW COVENANT

Sermon synopsis: A look at the typology of the Ark of the Covenant as fulfilled by Jesus in the New Covenant.

Gavin-Paynter/Esther_9.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Esther 9 - The Agag connection

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 15 October 2017

Topic Groups: ESTHER, TYPOLOGY, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: While Haman had wanted revenge on the Jews, he also wanted to profit from it. The first law that Haman got passed allowed for looting of the Jews’ property (Est 3:13), similar to the looting of Jewish property by the Nazis.

The attitude of the Jews is contrasted here. The second edict allowed them to “to plunder the property of their enemies” (Est 8:11), yet they did not. But why not? Why did they not take what was rightfully theirs legally?

Gavin-Paynter/Esther_8.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Esther 8 - Who is wearing the ring

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 21 May 2017

Topic Groups: ESTHER, TYPOLOGY, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: It was a memorable day for God’s people. We have a changing of the guard. Their enemy Haman who had plotted their annihilation was dead and Mordecai had replaced him! The king’s signet ring, which had been worn and misused by Haman, was now placed upon Mordecai’s finger and along with it came the authority to rule on behalf of the king.

When Haman wore the ring the result was hatred and death for God’s people.

When Mordecai wears the ring the result is pardon and liberty for God’s people.

Gavin-Paynter/Esther_7.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Esther 7 - You reap what you sow

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 23 April 2017

Topic Groups: ESTHER, TYPOLOGY, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Are you like Haman, so caught up in self and material gain that you do not realise that your day of ruin is so close? Many people are self-seeking and spend their lives chasing money, possessions and fame, only to find that being consumed by those things leads to their downfall!

Rom 2:8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

Gal 5:19-21 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious… selfish ambition … and the like. I warn you… that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

God sends no one away empty except those who are full of themselves. - D. L. Moody.

Johnray-Rennie/Ruth.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Ruth

Speaker: Johnray Rennie

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 29 January 2017

Topic Groups: RUTH, TYPOLOGY

Sermon synopsis: Naomi had to be exiled in order to be redeemed.
What the law could not provide for Naomi – grace/love did (Naomi was not welcomed back when she first arrived).
Ruth does not replace Naomi – (the Church does not replace Israel).
Ruth learns of Boaz through Naomi – (Gentiles learn of Jesus through Jewish writers).
But, Naomi meets Boaz through Ruth – (Jews converting in the end times).
No matter how much Boaz desires Ruth – Ruth had to approach him.
Boaz becomes Ruth’s kinsman redeemer and advocate even though she is a Gentile.
There are seven Gentile brides in the bible – none of their deaths are recorded – our hope.
The book of Ruth is read by the Jews on Pentecost – completing the theme of the harvest.

Charmaine-Rayment/Charmaine-Rayment.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Christ in the Sabbath

Speaker: Charmaine Rayment

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 27 November 2016

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY, SABBATH

Sermon synopsis: Do New Covenant Christians have to keep the Old Testament Saturday Sabbath as opposed to the Lord's Day (Sunday).

A Biblical perspective presented by Jews for Jesus.

Gavin-Paynter/Jesus-in-the-Old-Testament-Part5-The-ark.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Jesus in the Old Testament - Part 5 - The ark

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 4 September 2016

Topic Groups: THE ARK, SALVATION, TYPOLOGY

Sermon synopsis: It’s apparent that the ark is a type of Jesus. The ark was a shelter and refuge from the storm.

Col 3:3 … your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

Just as the ark was God’s chosen method for saving the ancient world from judgement, so Jesus is God’s means of saving us from the coming judgement.

John 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

God had instructed Noah “make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out” (6:14).

The pitch is a picture of the atonement. Like the pitch covered the ark, Jesus’ blood covers our sin. The word translated ‘coat’ is the Hebrew ‘kaphar’ (Strong’s 3722) can mean “cover over” (figurative). It is elsewhere translated appease, make atonement, pacified, forgiven or reconcile.

The word translated ‘pitch’ is the Hebrew ‘kopher’ (Strong’s 3724) can mean “the price of a life”. It is elsewhere translated ransom or satisfaction.

Ken-Paynter/The-test-of-Amalek.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The test of Amalek

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 31 July 2016

Topic Groups: THE FLESH, TYPOLOGY

Sermon synopsis: Amalek was a type of the flesh. He was descended from Esau; and Esau represented the carnal nature.

Exodus 17:10-11 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. This is no ordinary fight, it is not won through having great skill or great forces. While Joshua and his men had to fight in the battle, the outcome didn’t rest on their strength or weakness. Victory rested in Moses lifting his hands! Victory was gained as Moses lifted his hands to Heaven, a symbolic act of prayer and surrender.

Ken-Paynter/The-test-of-Massah-and-Meribah.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The test of Massah and Meribah

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 10 July 2016

Topic Groups: GRUMBLING, SPEECH, TYPOLOGY

Sermon synopsis: Grumbling is questioning and testing God. We put God to the test when we grumble and complain and try get God to do our will instead of His, by quoting Scripture out of context.

Ex 17:7 And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarrelled and because they tested the Lord saying, Is the Lord among us or not?

Wikipedia: The episode recounted by the Book of Exodus features the Israelites quarrelling with Moses about the lack of water, and Moses rebuking the Israelites for testing Yahweh; the text states that it was on this account that the place gained the name Massah, meaning testing, and the name Meribah, meaning quarrelling.

Gavin-Paynter/Esther_5.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Esther chapter 5 and 6

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 22 May 2016

Topic Groups: ESTHER, TYPOLOGY, PRAYER

Sermon synopsis: Having found favour with the king, Esther was offered up to “half the kingdom”. Now if you were given a “blank cheque” by the king what would you ask for? Money? Possessions? Power? Privileges? Esther used the king’s open offer to benefit not herself, but others. She was there primarily to intercede for her people.

Gavin-Paynter/Esther_2.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Esther - Part 2

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 3 January 2016

Topic Groups: ESTHER, TYPOLOGY, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Esther chapter 3 - We see the introduction of the villain Haman, a racist and type of the Antichrist who seeks to destroy the Jews.

In the Book of Esther, Mordecai is always a picture of the Holy Spirit while Haman is also a type of the flesh – the sinful self-centred old nature.

Just as the Amalekites were the sworn enemies of Israel, and Haman the Amalekite the enemy of the Jews, so the sinful nature is the sworn enemy of the Spirit.

The conflict here between Haman and Mordecai is typical of the ongoing battle we experience as Christians – the conflict between flesh and Spirit. The battle is internal and unseen to others, but it is as real as the conflict we see here in the book of Esther.

Gavin-Paynter/Esther_1.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Esther chapters 1 and 2

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 22 November 2015

Topic Groups: ESTHER, TYPOLOGY, FASTING

Sermon synopsis: The book of Esther is also unique in that it is the only book in the Bible (with the possible exception of Song of Solomon) that doesn’t directly mention God’s name! But despite that, God’s signature is seen in the book:

- In the events which take place in this book we repeatedly see the working of God acting in providence on behalf of his people.
- We find some very interesting types and shadows of New Testament truths.
- Esther calls for a fast regarding the plight of the Jews. Although not explicitly stated, fasting was always associated with prayer.
- God’s name appears in the acrostics.

Gavin-Paynter/Jesus-in-the-Old-Testament-Part4b.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Jesus in the Old Testament - Part 4b

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 27 September 2015

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY, NEW COVENANT, JESUS

Sermon synopsis: The Old Testament (Covenant) contains shadows – the New Testament has the realities:

Heb 10:1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves.

Last time we looked at Joseph and how he foreshadowed Jesus. Today we continue to look at the life of Joseph and how he was a type of the Lord Jesus.

Teresa-Sischy/The-Sabbath.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Sabbath

Speaker: Teresa Sischy

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 5 July 2015

Topic Groups: SABBATH, TYPOLOGY

Sermon synopsis: Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Johnray-Rennie/House-of-Joseph.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The house of Joseph

Speaker: Johnray Rennie

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 25 January 2015

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY

Sermon synopsis: John 4 v 11 – 18 is a story we hear from Sunday school. It reveals to us that just like the Jews, the Samaritans also struggled to understand the spiritual truth that Jesus speaks of.

Ken-Paynter/The-Feast-of-Tabernacles.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Feast of Tabernacles

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 22 December 2014

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY, COVENANTS, FEASTS

Sermon synopsis: The two most important ceremonies of the Feast of Tabernacles -pouring out of water drawn from the pool of Siloam, and the illumination of the Temple were both of post-Mosaic origin. These referred back to the water and the 'pillar of light' provided during the wilderness wandering, when people dwelt in temporary shelters. In connection with the Feast of Tabernacles John records.

John 7:37-38. In the last day (eighth day), that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.

Jesus was saying that He alone was the source of life and blessing.

Johnray-Rennie/Joseph-and-his-sons.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Joseph and his sons

Speaker: Johnray Rennie

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 23 November 2014

Topic Groups: JOSEPH, TYPOLOGY, CHARACTER STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Numbers in the bible have meaning, numbers one to ten have their meanings and so does the number 12 (and others). But number eleven is skipped, Joseph is the eleventh son of Jacob, his number has no meaning and he is not recorded as a tribe of Israel.

The house of Joseph is however clearly mentioned in the Old Testament as in (Obadiah 1 v 12) and (Zechariah 10 v 6) – alongside the House of Jacob and Judah respectively

Gavin-Paynter/Jesus-in-the-Old-Testament-Part4a.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Jesus in the Old Testament - Part 4a

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 23 November 2014

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY, NEW COVENANT, JESUS

Sermon synopsis: Joseph’s brothers were angry when he foretold that one day they would have to bow down to him. Some wanted to kill him and others thought that by selling him into slavery they had thwarted any fulfillment of his dreams forever.

But there came a day when they had to bow the knee to Joseph as the ruler in Egypt, who was the only one who could supply their desperate need during the famine.

Today there are those who refuse to acknowledge Jesus as Lord of their life. They try to silence his voice and scoff at the thought of being subservient to him. But whether they choose to serve him in this life or not, the day will come when they will have to bow before him and confess him as Lord. Even those who reject Jesus now, will ultimately have to bow the knee to him.

Phil 2:10-11 … that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

SERMON TOPIC: CHRIST IN THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES

Speaker: Charmaine Rayment

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 26 October 2014

Topic Groups: FEAST OF TABERNACLES, TYPOLOGY

Sermon synopsis: This presentation aims to enrich the church’s understanding of the gospel by going back to the Jewish roots of the Christian faith. We explain how the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkoth) is a vibrant part
of Jewish life today, as well as how the holiday offers a wealth of meaning for Christians who value their old Testament heritage. Sukkoth falls in October this year, in time for Israel’s Autumn. Jesus not only celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles, He used it as an occasion to reveal His nature and His mission.

Johnray-Rennie/Johnray-Rennie.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Fall of Adam

Speaker: Johnray Rennie

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 19 October 2014

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY

Sermon synopsis: 1 Corinthians 15:45-47 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven.

Gavin-Paynter/Kinsman-Redeemer.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Kinsman Redeemer and the Book of Ruth

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 10 August 2014

Topic Groups: KINSMAN REDEEMER, TYPOLOGY, RUTH

Sermon synopsis: In the Old Testament the kinsman-redeemer was the closest male relative who, according to law of Moses had the responsibility to act on behalf of a relative who was in need, danger, financial trouble or whose death needed to be avenged.

In the law it is made clear that only a kinsman could redeem his relative’s property, deliver his relative from slavery, avenge murder and raise up seed (children) on behalf of his relative.

This study is a look at the kinsman-redeemer in the Old Testament and the Book of Ruth and how this was a picture of the redemption brought to mankind by Jesus.

Johnray-Rennie/20140720_Jacob-and-Esau.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Jacob and Esau

Speaker: Johnray Rennie

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 20 July 2014

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY, CHARACTER STUDY

Sermon synopsis: A look at how Esau is a type of Adam and how Jacob foreshadowed Jesus.

Gen 25:21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, 'Why is this happening to me?' So she went to inquire of the LORD. 23 The LORD said to her, 'Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.' 24 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. 25 The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau. 26 After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so he was named Jacob.

Ken-Paynter/The-Feast-of-Pentecost.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Feast of Pentecost

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 6 July 2014

Topic Groups: PENTECOST, TYPOLOGY, FEASTS

Sermon synopsis: The Feast of Passover: had to do with “Peace with God”
The Feast of Unleavened bread and Feast of First Fruits: had to do with the “Peace of God”
The Feast of The Feast of Pentecost: has to do with the “Power of God”

The Feast of Pentecost is the 4th step that the believer must take towards the “Rest of God” which is typified by the Feast of Tabernacles.

Hebrews 4:9-11 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

Ken-Paynter/The-Feast-of-First-Fruits.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Feast of First Fruits

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 1 June 2014

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY, COVENANTS, FEASTS

Sermon synopsis: The Feast of First-fruits, on the 17th day of Nisan, was a celebration of the harvest, when a sheaf representing the very first of the harvest was waved before the Lord, as a symbolic gesture that dedicated the coming harvest to Him.

Jesus rose from the dead on the Feast of First-fruits.
The Apostle Paul said: 'But now is Christ risen from the dead and become the first fruits of them that slept.' (1 Corinthians 15:20,23)

Ken-Paynter/The-Feast-of-Unleavened-bread.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Feast of Unleavened bread

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 18 May 2014

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY, FEASTS, NEW COVENANT

Sermon synopsis: Unleavened Bread (Leviticus 23:6)
Pointed to the Messiah’s sinless life (as leaven is a picture of sin in the Bible) making Him the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

Jesus’ body was in the grave during the first days of this feast, like a kernel of wheat planted and waiting to burst forth as the bread of life.

Ken-Paynter/The-Feast-of-Passover.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Feast of Passover

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 4 May 2014

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY, FEASTS, PASSOVER

Sermon synopsis: Leviticus 23:4 On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the Lord's Passover.

The Hebrew word 'Pesach' means to pass over, to exempt or to spare. Passover, which begins on the 14th day of Nisan (the first month of the Jewish calendar) celebrates the epic exodus of the nation of Israel out of bondage. The Jews had been slaves in Egypt for generations, but were refused their freedom despite plague after plague being visited by God, on the Egyptians, through Moses. However the night before the final ‘plague’ which caused Pharaoh to change his mind, the Israelites were given very explicit instructions...

They were to sacrifice a lamb and place the blood upon the door posts and lintels of their homes.

Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast - as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.

Leston-Blackburn/Leston-Blackburn.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Jesus in the Old Testament - Part 3

Speaker: Leston Blackburn

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 22 March 2009

Topic Groups: TYPOLOGY, JESUS

Sermon synopsis: Some people view the Bible in 2 distinct, unrelated parts – the Old Testament and the New Testament. To some, the Old Testament is a collection of books written thousands of years ago in a Middle-Eastern, agricultural setting, and consequently, while it may have some value today, there are, some would say, sizeable chunks that are irrelevant to a modern, westernised world. People who hold this view will tell you that the New Testament is really what we should focus on, because it reveals Christ to us and contains teachings relevant to us as Christians and as Church. They would argue that one doesn’t see much about Jesus in the Old Testament Scriptures.

But nothing could actually be further from the truth! In fact the Old Testament gives one of the most wonderful, detailed and precise portraits of Christ that we could ever wish to see! It is just a case of knowing what to look for! I believe the primary reason God gave us the Old Testament is because He has the very vital and purposeful intention of pointing us to Christ! As St. Augustine put it, ‘The New is in the Old concealed, the Old is in the New revealed!” God has given us the Old Testament as a roadmap to the heart of the Father through the gift of the son, by the enabling and empowering of the Spirit! It points us to Christ, God come in the flesh to reconcile mankind to Himself! Indeed, to hold any other view of the Old Testament is to hold a view contrary to what Jesus taught! Jesus confirmed that the entire Old Testament was a portrait of Himself!

Sermon synopsis: Esther 4:12 When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, 13 he sent back this answer: “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?”
15 Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: 16 “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”
