Topic Groups: THE BIBLE, HEARING GOD

Sermon synopsis: 2 Kings 22:8 Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary, 'I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the LORD.' He gave it to Shaphan, who read it. 9 Then Shaphan the secretary went to the king and reported to him: 'Your officials have paid out the money that was in the temple of the LORD and have entrusted it to the workers and supervisors at the temple.' 10 Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, 'Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.' And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.
11 When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes. 12 He gave these orders to Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Acbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the secretary and Asaiah the king’s attendant: 13 'Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for the people and for all Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the LORD’s anger that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written there concerning us.'

Topic Groups: THE BIBLE, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Are you using the Bible to try get God to do what you want?
In Matthew 4:5-6 we see that this type of manipulation is not new. Satan used it in his temptation of Jesus in the wilderness when he said 'it is written'. Are you using the “it is written” line on God?

SERMON TOPIC: The Bible - Part 3 - What are you doing with the Bible

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 8 May 2011

Topic Groups: THE BIBLE

Sermon synopsis: A comparison of the Qumran manuscript of Isaiah with the Massoretic text revealed them to be extremely close in accuracy to each other. A comparison of Isaiah 53 shows that only 17 letters differ from the Massoretic text. Ten of these are mere differences in spelling (like our 'honor' and the English 'honour') and produce no change in the meaning at all. Four more are very minor differences, such as the presence of a conjunction (and) which are stylistic rather than substantive. Out of 166 words in this chapter, only this one word is really in question, and it does not at all change the meaning of the passage. We are told by Biblical scholars that this is typical of the whole manuscript of Isaiah. (SOURCE: R. Laird Harris, Can I Trust My Bible? - Chicago: Moody Press, 1963)

SERMON TOPIC: God's Word

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 16 July 1995

Topic Groups: THE BIBLE, HOLINESS, CHRISTIAN WITNESS

Sermon synopsis: We are to be living epistles read of all men.
We need to show by our lives that Jesus can and will make a difference.

Why is it important that we regularly read God’s Word?

Do we “go by feel” when living our Christian lives or are we looking into the mirror of God’s Word.

James 1: 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.

Heb 4: 12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
