SERMON TOPIC: Mystery Babylon - Part 1

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 20 February 2019

Topic Groups: MYSTERY BABYLON, PROPHECY, REVELATION

Sermon synopsis: The Apocalypse, written by John during his earlier time on the island of Patmos, is a series of vivid visions surrounding future events, one of the most riveting and intense being that of the harlot riding the beast in chapter 17.

Interpreters are divided as to whether it is a picture of past events, fulfilled over the Church Age, or a depiction of things to come in the future.

SERMON TOPIC: Overview of Book of Revelation - Part 1 of 3

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 7 May 2017

Topic Groups: REVELATION, PROPHECY, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Rev 1:1-3 The revelation * from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, ** because the time is near. ***

* The book is also known as the Apocalypse (Koine Greek meaning “an uncovering”) of John. “If God did not wish us to understand the book of Revelation, He would not have given it to us at all.” - (D.L. Moody)

** Some shy away from this book, but it is the only book in the Bible to promise a blessing to those who read it.

*** “The time is near” – used by Preterists to support their argument of a 1st-century fulfilment. But this is time from God’s perspective. (2 Pet 3:3-9)

Gavin-Paynter/The-mark-of-the-beast.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The mark of the beast

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 29 March 2015

Topic Groups: ANTICHRIST, PROPHECY, REVELATION

Sermon synopsis: In what is one of the most well–known passages in Revelation, John writes:

Rev 13:16-18 He causes all, the small and the great, the rich and the poor, and the free and the slave, to be given marks on their right hands, or on their foreheads; and that no one would be able to buy or to sell, unless he has that mark, the name of the beast or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. He who has understanding, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is six hundred sixty-six. (WEB)

How do proponents of the three main prophetic viewpoints interpret this mark of the beast?
1) Preterist:
- the emperor’s image on Roman coins
- the certificate of sacrifice to the emperor
2) Historicist:
- the practice of making the sign of the cross
- SDA: an international Sunday law
3) Futurist:
- Mark of commerce – most likely a credit facility in the form of a microchip implant or RFID tag.

SERMON TOPIC: The seven churches in Revelation

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 28 February 1999

Topic Groups: PROPHECY, REVELATION

Sermon synopsis: The seven churches in the book of Revelation were literal churches in Asia Minor that typify churches we see at any time in all ages. However there is also a general correlation between the church ages and the sequence of the churches listed.
Rev 1:10 On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11 which said: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”

SERMON TOPIC: Revelation - Part 1

Speaker: Warren Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date:

Topic Groups: REVELATION, PROPHECY, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: There are many ways in which Bible scholars approach the book of Revelation:-

(1) Most approach it with the view that it is not to be taken literally at all.
(2) The historical school regards the book as being largely fulfilled.
(3) Others regard the book as being incomprehensible and that it is impossible to arrive at any understanding of the mysteries that it contains.
(4) Finally, there are those who regard the book as literal, and that most of it is prophetic, awaiting fulfillment at some future date.

The approach to the interpretation of the book presented here is that it is literal, and most of it deals with future events.

SERMON TOPIC: Revelation - Chap 1-11

Speaker: Warren Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date:

Topic Groups: REVELATION, PROPHECY, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: This book is a REVELATION.
The Oxford Dictionary defines “REVELATION” as “Knowledge disclosed to man by DIVINE or SUPERNATURAL agency.” Thus, the TRUTH contained in this book is GOD-GIVEN TRUTH. What the REVELATION contains could NEVER have been KNOWN had GOD not been pleased to disclose it. When GOD disclosed certain FACTS to the prophet DANIEL concerning the FUTURE He said, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up until the TIME OF THE END.” Dan 12:9.
Speaking to JOHN however, GOD says, “Do not seal up the words of the PROPHECY of THIS BOOK, because the time is near.” Rev 22:10.
This book is thus not a SEALED but an UNSEALED book.
We must be careful not to allegorise or spiritualise what John has to say.
Let us understand the book as being a literal record of what GOD intends to do in the FUTURE.
