Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 25 January 2015

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, NEW COVENANT, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: In the last part of Hebrews 12 we compare the Old and New Covenants.

In Hebrews 13 we look at 'Christian Living' with regards to love, hospitality, prayer, sexual purity, materialism, legalism, submission to leadership and the new sacrifices of the New Covenant.

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 12 - Part 2 - Discipline

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 12 October 2014

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, DISCIPLINE, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Now, quoting Proverbs 3:11-12 the author of Hebrews shows that, contrary to what some believe, God’s single desire isn't just for us to be happy. God also wants us to be holy and will use discipline to achieve that goal!

Heb 12:4-6, 10 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.” ... but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 12 - Part 1 Running the race

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 30 March 2014

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, PERSEVERANCE, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Hebrews 12:1 (NIV) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Heb 12:1 (NKJV) Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.

The Christian life is compared to a race, which we need to run. But how do we run the race?

Ken-Paynter/20140223_Discipline.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Discipline

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 23 February 2014

Topic Groups: DISCIPLINE, SUFFERING, HEBREWS

Sermon synopsis: Hebrews 12:4-12
In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son. Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined and everyone undergoes discipline then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.

Gavin-Paynter/20140223_Who-am-I_A-citizen-of-heaven.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Who am I. A citizen of heaven

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 23 February 2014

Topic Groups: DESTINY, HEAVEN, HEBREWS

Sermon synopsis: Ambassadors are not citizens of the country where they reside.
Likewise Jesus says of his disciples:
John 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
1 Pet 1:1 To God's elect, strangers in the world...
Heb 11:13 And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.

Gavin-Paynter/20131215_Hebrews_11_Part4-Looking-for-a-city.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 11 - Part 4 - Looking for a city

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 21 December 2013

Topic Groups: HEAVEN, HEBREWS, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Heb 11:9-10 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

In this way Abraham typifies Christians, who are “aliens and strangers on earth” and who by faith are “longing for a better country - a heavenly one.”

Gavin-Paynter/20131117_Hebrews_11_Part3-Hall-of-Faith.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 11 - Part 3 - Hall of Faith

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 17 November 2013

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, FAITH, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: in the book of Hebrews we’re given 3 broad examples of those we should imitate with regards to faith:
(1) Hebrews 11 - the heroes of old i.e. Biblical heroes and those in Church history.
(2) Hebrews 12:2 - Jesus
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
(3) Hebrews 13:7 - Our leaders
Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.

Gavin-Paynter/20130303_Hebrews_11_Part2-Hall-of-Faith.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 11 - Part 2 - Hall of Faith

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 4 August 2013

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, FAITH, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: The cemetery at Westminster Abbey could rightfully be said to contain the 'who's who' of figures from British history.
In a similar fashion Hebrews 11 reads much like the 'who's who' of the Old Testament, listing Abel, Enoch, Noah,
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets.
As such some have referred to Hebrews 11 as the Bible's 'Westminster Abbey', God's 'Hall of Fame' or 'Hall of Faith'.

Gavin-Paynter/20121125_Hebrews-11_Faith.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 11 - Faith

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 25 November 2012

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, FAITH, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Heb 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
You may put your faith in an ship that doesn’t reach it’s destination.
That is why faith is not the same as positive confession, which is faith in faith, or faith in yourself and your own ability.
True Biblical faith has God as it’s object.
Mark 11:22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered.

Gavin-Paynter/20120429_Hebrews_8-10_A-better-covenant.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 8-10 - A better covenant

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 29 April 2012

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, NEW COVENANT, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: With his death, Jesus introduced a New Covenant:
1 Cor 11:25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.'
Not only was it a New Covenant; it was a better covenant.
Heb 7:22 Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.

Gavin-Paynter/20120205_Hebrews_5-7_Part3_Greater-than-Abraham.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 5-7 (Part 3) - Greater than Abraham

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 19 February 2012

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, LEADERSHIP, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Abraham, whose birth name was Abram, is honoured by adherents of the 3 great monotheistic 'Abrahamic' religions namely Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
After Moses who is mentioned 80 times (NASB), Abraham is the most frequently mentioned Old Testament character in the New Testament. He is mentioned 73 times in contrast to David (59) and Elijah (30).
But in Hebrews 5-7 we see that Jesus is greater than Abraham.

Gavin-Paynter/20111127_Hebrews_5-7_Part2-The-priesthood-of-Melchizedek.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 5-7 (Part 2) - The priesthood of Melchizedek

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 27 November 2011

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, MELCHIZEDEK, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Melchizedek is a type of Jesus in the following ways:
(1) Priesthood not based on ancestry
(2) Both were King-Priests
(3) Similar priestly elements
(4) Both were greater than Abraham
(5) Both were kings of righteousness
(6) Both were kings of peace
(7) Both had an eternal priesthood.

Gavin-Paynter/20111030_Hebrews_5-7_Part1-Greater-than-Aaron.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 5-7 (Part 1) - Greater than Aaron

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 30 October 2011

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, NEW COVENANT, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Jesus is greater than Aaron because:
(1) He is sinless
(2) He serves in a better tabernacle
(3) He officiates for a better covenant
(4) He offered a better sacrifice
(5) His intercession is superior
(6) He has a greater ministry
(7) He has a better order of priesthood (the order of Melchizedek).

Gavin-Paynter/20110902_Hebrews-4_Greater-than-Joshua.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 4 - Greater than Joshua

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 9 October 2011

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, SABBATH, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: The English name Joshua is a rendering of the Hebrew 'Yehoshua', meaning 'Jehovah is salvation'.
'Jesus' is the English of the Greek transliteration of 'Yehoshua' via Aramaic.
So the name 'Jesus' is the same as Joshua meaning 'Jehovah is salvation'.
Matt 1:21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.'
So while Joshua saved the Israelites by leading them from the land of slavery to the Promised Land, Jesus saves 'all who believe' from a much greater slavery – that of slavery to sin.
John 8:34 Jesus replied, 'I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.'

Gavin-Paynter/20110220_Hebrews-3.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 3

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 20 February 2011

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, NEW COVENANT, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Jesus is greater than Moses, the mediator of the Old Covenant. Just as those who rebelled against Moses and had unbelief never entered God's rest, so those who rebel against Jesus and the New and greater Covenant will not enter God's eternal rest. We are exhorted to encourage one another daily through fellowship so that we will not be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.

Gavin-Paynter/Gavin-Paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 2

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 27 June 2010

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, JESUS, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: We saw last time how Jesus is greater than the angels because he is the SON OF GOD. Now we are shown how he also was the SON OF MAN and became “a little lower than the angels”.
Jesus is not ashamed to call us (humans) his brothers. In the NT Jesus is referred to as:
- Son of God: 38 times, most of these references by others.
- Son of Man: 84 times, most of these references by himself.

Gavin-Paynter/Gavin-Paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 1 - Part 2 - Greater than the angels

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 23 May 2010

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, TRINITY, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: The JW's and SDA church claim that Jesus is the archangel Michael. But we’re given 7 facts about the person and work of Jesus to show His superiority to the angels.
(1) He has a superior name
(2) He is to be worshiped
(3) The Father addresses Him as God
(4) He is the creator
(5) He is immutable
(6) He is eternal
(7) He is seated at God’s right hand.
So we are privileged to have Jesus – the very ‘Son of God’ - as our covenant mediator and the one who delivered God’s final revelation to us.
However with greater privilege and knowledge comes greater responsibility - and the potential for greater judgment if we become desensitized and take our privileges for granted.

Gavin-Paynter/Gavin-Paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 1 - Part 1 - Greater than the prophets

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 25 April 2010

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, TRINITY, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Not only does God have a Son, but His Son is greater than all the prophets (not just a prophet amongst many as Islam teaches). We’re given 7 facts about the person and work of Jesus to show His superiority to the prophets.
(1) God appointed Him heir of all things
(2) God made the universe through Him
(3) He is the radiance of God’s glory
(4) He is the exact representation of God’s being
(5) He sustains all things by his powerful word
(6) He provided purification for sins
(7) He sat down at the right hand of God

Leston-Blackburn/Leston-Blackburn.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Hebrews 12

Speaker: Leston Blackburn

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 13 December 2009

Topic Groups: HEBREWS, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Heb 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
