SERMON TOPIC: Outreach and Evangelism

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 2 February 2020

Topic Groups: OUTREACH, EVANGELISM, GREAT COMMISSION

Sermon synopsis: The root of the word evangelism, evangel, is derived from the Greek word euangelion which is translated good news. From that same word, we derive the word gospel. Many words in English are synonymous, evangel(ism), gospel and good news all speak of the same thing and find their root in the same word. They speak of the act of spreading the gospel and to the content of the message that is given. This is an important point to note they refer both to the method and the message.

SERMON TOPIC: Wycliffe Bible Translators in SA

Speaker: Johanna Pillinger

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 7 July 2019

Topic Groups: MISSIONS, GREAT COMMISSION, BIBLE

Sermon synopsis: Bible Translation is at the core of who Wycliffe are. We want to see God’s Word alive in every language, transforming lives and communities in this generation.

Almost one third of the world's 7,000 languages do not even have one translated verse of God's word. This means that nearly 300 million people are still waiting for a translation of the scriptures into the language of their hearts. While they wait they are kept from fully understanding God's love and His ways.

We are privileged to partner with indigenous churches and Bible Translation organisations around the world to bring God's Word to them sooner rather than later.

Together we are committed to beginning Bible Translation work in every language that needs it by 2025 – introducing VISION 2025!

SERMON TOPIC: The Great Commission - Part 5 - Trends and opportunities

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 18 November 2018

Topic Groups: GREAT COMMISSION, MISSIONS, EVANGELISM

Sermon synopsis: Jesus gave the Great Commission 2000 years ago, what’s happened since?

“With the explosion of the church in the Southern Hemisphere, we must ask, does the church of the Lord Jesus Christ still need the western, denominational career missionary? Since this model of service is 200 years old, have we not come to a stage where we need to ask ‘How does God want us to serve the church in the present context?’ ” - Paul R. Gupta and Sherwood G. Lingenfelter

SERMON TOPIC: The Great Commission - Part 7 - Trends and opportunities

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 26 August 2018

Topic Groups: MISSIONS, GREAT COMMISSION, EVANGELISM

Sermon synopsis: TREND 1: MIGRATION
In the past you had to go to a foreign country to be a missionary to other people groups. Now many of those people groups are coming to us. “Go into all the world” includes evangelising when the whole world comes to us e.g. the day of Pentecost.
TREND 2: URBANIZATION
South Africa’s urbanisation trends are far higher than that of the African continent’s average. It is now more urbanised than rural. From only around 43% in 1950, by mid-2014 64.3% of the population were living in urban areas. Because there is a higher percentage of Christians living in cities, urbanisation is actually good for evangelism and missions. In the past you had to go to the rural areas to reach the majority of the country’s population. Now many of those people groups are coming to the cities.

SERMON TOPIC: The Great Commission - Part 6 - Trends and opportunities - HIV-AIDS

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 29 July 2018

Topic Groups: HIV AIDS, MISSIONS, GREAT COMMISSION

Sermon synopsis: HIV-AIDS is a pandemic that is ravaging families, communities and entire nations. Since the start of the epidemic around 78 million have become infected with HIV and 35 million people have died of AIDS related illnesses. Worldwide, 1.8 million people became newly infected with HIV in 2016, of which 160 000 were children. In 2016, there were 36.7 million people living with HIV worldwide and 1 million people died from AIDS-related causes.

We have an opportunity to show the love of Jesus to those who are suffering. Look at how Jesus treated lepers who were the outcasts of his day and the equivalent of modern AIDS sufferers.

We need to repent of attitudes of prejudice, apathy, lack of compassion, and double standards in relation to sexual sin, recognizing the suffering of millions who are affected directly and indirectly by this disease, many through no fault of their own. But we also have to challenge and confront the sins that contribute to the spread of HIV.

SERMON TOPIC: Last words of Jesus - The great commission

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 12 July 2015

Topic Groups: MISSIONS, EVANGELISM, GREAT COMMISSION

Sermon synopsis: When someone is about to leave us (e.g. death or a departure to a faraway land), the last words they speak are ones that they consider to be the most important. There’s no time for wasted words when you have little time left with your loved ones. You want to utilize what time is left to impact them and, as we see in the case of Jesus, to leave any final instructions.

Among the last words spoken by Jesus after his resurrection and before his return to heaven are the words which have come to be known as: “The Great Commission”:

Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:15-16)

SERMON TOPIC: The Great Commission - Part 3- Global trends

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 7 June 2015

Topic Groups: MISSIONS, GREAT COMMISSION, EVANGELISM

Sermon synopsis: If current patterns continue, the unreached will still be 23-28% of the world’s population in 2025 (Stan Park, Ethne '06). So how should we approach missions and evangelism? Should we just keep on doing what we did before?

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got.

So what are some of the global trends we are seeing in today’s world? How do these present challenges or opportunities for us to advance and complete the Great Commission?

(1) Unbelievers opposition (increased persecution)
(2) Migration
(3) Urbanisation

SERMON TOPIC: The Great Commission - Part 2 - Uneven distribution of resources

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 29 June 2014

Topic Groups: MISSIONS, GREAT COMMISSION, EVANGELISM

Sermon synopsis: There is enough evangelistic activity to reach the whole world.
Enough activity for every one in the world to hear a 1-hour presentation of the Gospel every other day all year long.
Over 1,43 billion hours of evangelism generated by Christians every year: personal witness, radio, TV, Internet, literature, etc.

But this evangelistic activity is unevenly targeted:
91% of all Christian outreach/evangelism does not target non-Christians, but targets other Christians.

SERMON TOPIC: The Great Commission

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 24 July 2011

Topic Groups: MISSIONS, GREAT COMMISSION, EVANGELISM

Sermon synopsis: Often people ask, 'What prophetic event remains unfulfilled to prevent the return of Jesus?'
Well consider this prophecy by Jesus.
In Matthew 24:14, speaking prophetically Jesus said that 'this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.'
Q: Now, has the whole world heard the gospel?
Q: Do all people have the Bible in their own language?
So while we all look forward to the return of Jesus, WE HAVE UNFINISHED WORK.
'We talk of the Second Coming; half the world has never heard of the first.' (Oswald J. Smith)
