SERMON TOPIC: The Flood

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 8 March 2019

Topic Groups: FLOOD, GENESIS, CREATIONISM

Sermon synopsis: We will look at the following questions briefly:
1) Where did the water come from to flood the earth?
2) Where did all the floodwater go to?
3) Did it rain before the flood?
4) What were the waters above the firmament? Did earth have a water canopy?
5) Why did man live for so long before the flood?

Ken-Paynter/Genesis-The-effects-of-Adams-disobedience.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Genesis - The effects of Adams disobedience

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 15 February 2019

Topic Groups: GENESIS, CREATIONISM, SIN

Sermon synopsis: Man died spiritually.
Man faced physical death as he was banished from Eden. (God placed a guard at the garden of Eden.)
Adam’s sin affected the animal kingdom.
Adam’s sin affected the environment? (ground was cursed).
Adam’s sin affected mankind? (Man had to work to produce food to eat; Pain for women in child birth and we now inherit Adam’s sinful nature).

Gavin-Paynter/WHAT-DOES-AFTER-ITS-KIND-MEAN.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: What does "After its kind" mean

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 1 February 2019

Topic Groups: CREATIONISM, GENESIS, APOLOGETICS

Sermon synopsis: Repeatedly in the creation account (Gen 1:11,12,21,24, 25) we are told that God created plants and animals ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND. These passages seem to imply that no kind of animal or plant would produce offspring outside of its created kind.
- The idea is that there was no single ancestor for all living organisms (as evolutionists hold).
- Yet there was the ability for diversification within the different “kinds” of plants and creatures.

Mark-Ambler/Mark-Ambler.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Gospel is in Genesis

Speaker: Mark Ambler

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 17 November 2018

Topic Groups: CREATIONISM, GENESIS, APOLOGETICS

Sermon synopsis: While salvation is not based on belief in a historical Genesis, understanding the doctrine of salvation is inseparable from the history of mankind’s fall and promised redemption described in the early chapters of the Bible. Looks at the weaknesses of the science used to discredit a recent, six day creation.

Ken-Paynter/Genesis-and-The-Sanctity-of-Life-Part2.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Genesis and The Sanctity of Life - Part 2

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 11 November 2018

Topic Groups: ETHICS, GENESIS, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Does the Bible endorse capital punishment?
Is abortion wrong?
Is euthanasia wrong?

Gavin-Paynter/The-Gap-Theory.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Gap Theory

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 9 November 2018

Topic Groups: CREATIONISM, GENESIS, APOLOGETICS

Sermon synopsis: There are two variants of the theory:
PASSIVE GAP THEORY (Restitution Creationism, Creatio Ex Materia)
According to this view God simply waited for millions of years after creating the heavens and the earth to complete his creative work.

ACTIVE GAP THEORY (Ruin-Reconstruction)
This Theory holds that the earth was originally created with form, but after a gap of millions of years it became “without form and void”. The idea is that, at the end of these geological ages, a great cataclysm took place on earth, with Satan having rebelled in heaven and many of the angels following him in that rebellion. God, therefore, cast him to the earth, and the earth underwent a great cataclysm, leaving it finally without form and void, and with darkness on the face of the deep, as described in Genesis 1:2.

Gavin-Paynter/Day-Age-Theory-(Progressive-Creationism).jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Creatio Ex Nihilo and the views of Old Earth Creationism

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 19 October 2018

Topic Groups: CREATIONISM, GENESIS, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: This study looks at creatio ex nihilo (the idea that God created the Earth and the rest of the universe out of nothing) versus creatio ex materia (the idea that heaven and earth already existed in a “formless and void” state, to which God brings form and order).

We also look at some theories that Old Earth Creationists have regarding the timing of the creative week, namely Theistic Evolution and Progressive Creationism. Next time we'll consider the Gap Theory and Young Earth Creationism.

Ken-Paynter/Genesis-and-The-Sanctity-of-Life.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Genesis and The Sanctity of Life

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 14 September 2018

Topic Groups: GENESIS, ETHICS, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: God has given us a free will and all through life we are faced with choices. (Every choice has consequences).

- Does the Bible endorse capital punishment?
- Is abortion wrong?
- Is euthanasia wrong?

Gavin-Paynter/Are-there-2-creation-accounts.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Are there 2 creation accounts

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 7 September 2018

Topic Groups: GENESIS, CREATIONISM, APOLOGETICS

Sermon synopsis: A frequent claim is made that there are two different (and contradictory) creation accounts in Genesis 1 and 2.

- This alleged contradiction is used to try and prove that two different authors composed these accounts.
- Critics and sceptics use it in their efforts to show the Bible cannot be trusted.
- Some Christians who believe in a universe that is billions of years old use it in trying to show that these chapters should not be understood in their plain sense.
- Others claim that 2 separate men were created, one by Elohim and one by Yahweh Elohim.

Let’s examine the passages in question, in particular Day 3 and Day 6.

Ken-Paynter/Genesis-The-tree-of-the-knowledge-of-good-and-evil.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Genesis - The tree of the knowledge of good and evil

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 2 September 2018

Topic Groups: GENESIS, CREATIONISM, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Scripture makes it clear that the trees in the Garden of Eden were actual trees, there is no hint that they were meant to be seen as just symbolic.

In Western Christian art, the fruit of “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” is commonly depicted as the apple, but it is not possible for us to determine anything of the nature of either of the two specified trees in the Garden of Eden.

The Bible does not emphasize there was anything magical about the fruit on the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The life humankind experienced would be due to their obedience to God rather than any physical results from eating from the tree.

Ken-Paynter/Genesis-Cains-Wife.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Genesis - Cains Wife

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 31 August 2018

Topic Groups: GENESIS, CREATIONISM, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: At the historic Scopes Trial in Tennessee in 1925, William Jennings Bryan, the prosecutor who stood for the Christian faith, failed to answer the question about Cain’s wife posed by the ACLU lawyer Clarence Darrow.

In recent times, this same example was taken up by Carl Sagan in his book Contact (which was on the New York Times best-seller list) and used in the movie of the same name based upon this work.
Sagan cleverly listed a number of common questions (including Cain’s wife) that are often directed at Christians in an attempt to supposedly prove the Bible is full of contradictions and can’t be defended.

The truth is—most Christians probably couldn’t answer these questions. And yet there are answers.

Gavin-Paynter/The-seed-of-the-woman.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The seed of the woman

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 24 August 2018

Topic Groups: GENESIS, SEED OF THE WOMAN, PROPHECY

Sermon synopsis: There is a prophetic sense to the passage in Genesis 3:15, called the Protoevangelium (First Gospel), the first proclamation of the Good News: for, during the punishment of the serpent, God refers to the future, that there will be one “who will crush the head of the serpent.” There is hope for the human race!

Gen 3:14-15 (NASB) The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

Ken-Paynter/Genesis-E-The-age-of-the-earth.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Genesis E - The age of the earth

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 19 August 2018

Topic Groups: GENESIS, CREATIONISM, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: The question of the age of the earth has produced heated discussions on Internet debate boards, TV, radio, in classrooms, and in many churches, Christian colleges, and seminaries.

The primary sides are:
- Young-earth proponents (biblical age of the earth and universe of about 6,000 years)
- Old-earth proponents (secular age of the earth of about 4.5 billion years and a universe about 14 billion years old)

The difference is immense! Let’s give a little history of where these two basic calculations came from and which worldview is more reasonable.

Ken-Paynter/Genesis-D-Why-was-there-light-before-the-sun-was-created.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Genesis D - Why was there light before the sun was created

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 17 August 2018

Topic Groups: GENESIS, CREATIONISM, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: We know today that all it takes to have a day-night cycle is a rotating Earth and light coming from one direction. The Bible tells us clearly that God created light on the first day, as well as the Earth.

Thus we can deduce that the Earth was already rotating in space relative to this created light. God can, of course, create light without a secondary source. We are told that in the new heavens and Earth there will be no need for sun or moon Rev 21:23. In Genesis, God even defines a day and a night in terms of light or its absence.

Gavin-Paynter/Where-was-the-garden-of-Eden.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Where was the garden of Eden

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 11 August 2018

Topic Groups: GENESIS, CREATIONISM, APOLOGETICS

Sermon synopsis: Of course, some atheists will deny that there ever was a Garden of Eden. A few Christians and Jews claim that the Garden was not literal, but the Genesis narrative is simply a poetic allegory for humanity’s loss of innocence.

Well known creationist, Ken Ham, believes that the Deluge of Noah devastated the landscape of the earth to such an extent that it is impossible to know where the Garden was.

But Moses gives very specific pointers to a real geographic location. -

- A direction relative to Israel
- 4 rivers linked to specific countries
- A neighbouring country rich in mineral reserves

Ken-Paynter/Genesis-C-Who-was-the-author.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Genesis - Who was the author

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 5 August 2018

Topic Groups: GENESIS, CREATIONISM, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Pentateuch means the first five books of the Bible. These books are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The word Pentateuch comes from two Greek words that mean 'five books' or 'five scrolls'. According to tradition, the books were written by the Israelite leader, Moses. The Pentateuch is often called the Five Books of Moses or the Torah and tells the story from the Creation of the world to the death of Moses and the preparation of the Israelites to enter the land of Canaan.

Until the last three hundred years, both Jews and Christians were almost unanimous in their belief that Moses was the author (or at least the compiler) of Genesis as well as the author of Exodus through Deuteronomy. Reasons for the rejection of Moses' authorship were not based upon any objective evidence but stemmed from an anti-supernatural bias on behalf of the critics.

Ken-Paynter/Genesis-B-The-Trinity.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Trinity in Genesis

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 3 August 2018

Topic Groups: TRINITY, GENESIS, APOLOGETICS

Sermon synopsis: God: This is the ancient Hebrew word Elohim. Grammatically it is a plural word used as if it were singular. The verbs and pronouns used with Elohim should be in the plural, but when Elohim refers to the LORD God the verbs and pronouns are in the singular.

Clarke says: 'He must be strangely prejudiced indeed who cannot see that the doctrine of a Trinity, and of a Trinity in unity, is expressed in the above words.'

Gavin-Paynter/The-serpent.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The serpent in Eden

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 28 July 2018

Topic Groups: SATAN, SPIRIT WORLD, GENESIS

Sermon synopsis: WAS THE SERPENT IN GENESIS 3 A SNAKE THAT COULD SPEAK? Are snakes evil? Christians believe that the serpent in the garden was Satan. But why? Who was the nachash and the serpentine seraph?

Ken-Paynter/Genesis-A-Why-was-it-written.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Genesis - A - Why was it written

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 20 July 2018

Topic Groups: GENESIS, CREATIONISM, BOOK STUDY

Sermon synopsis: Adam is an important person in the Gospel narrative.
But did he really exist? Was he a historical person or not?

We saw in our last study that taking Genesis literally is foundational to the Gospel and although some professing Christians have ignored this, it is perhaps the main reason why our present western society is immunised against the Gospel message.

Many leading thinkers and writers opposed to the Gospel have cantered their scepticism and criticism of the whole Gospel narrative on precisely this question.

Leston-Blackburn/Leston-Blackburn.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Science and The Bible - Part 2

Speaker: Leston Blackburn

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 17 October 2010

Topic Groups: CREATIONISM, GENESIS, APOLOGETICS

Sermon synopsis: Science and The Bible - Part 2

Leston-Blackburn/Leston-Blackburn.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Science and The Bible - Part 1

Speaker: Leston Blackburn

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 10 October 2010

Topic Groups: CREATIONISM, GENESIS, APOLOGETICS

Sermon synopsis: Science and The Bible - Part 1

Gavin-Paynter/Gavin-Paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The seed of the woman

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 9 February 1997

Topic Groups: SEED OF THE WOMAN, PROPHECY, GENESIS

Sermon synopsis: The most ancient prophecy we have is in Genesis 3:15, where a promised deliverer who would be 'the seed of the woman' would redeem us by breaking the power of Satan ('He shall bruise you on the head'). But who is the seed of the woman and when was this fulfilled?
