JESUS IN THE

OLD TESTAMENT

PART 4b

Type:

Chiefly Christian theology a figure, episode, or symbolic factor resembling some future reality in such a way as to foreshadow or prefigure it. 1

A figure, representation, or symbol of something to come, such as an event in the Old Testament that foreshadows another in the New Testament. 1

Antitype:

One that is foreshadowed by or identified with an earlier symbol or type, such as a figure in the New Testament who has a counterpart in the Old Testament. 1

TYPES & ANTITYPES

It has been said of the Old and New Testaments:

The New is in the Old contained - The Old is in the New explained

The New is in the Old concealed – The Old is in the New revealed.

TYPOLOGY

OLD

TESTAMENT

NEW

TESTAMENT

The Old Testament (Covenant) contains shadows – the New Testament has the realities:

Heb 10:1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves.

Col 3:16-17 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

Today we continue to look at the life of Joseph and how he was a type of the Lord Jesus.

SHADOWS

Last time we looked at Joseph and how he foreshadowed Jesus. We saw that:

Both had miraculous births

Both were shepherds

Both were much loved by their father

Both were envied by their brothers

Both exposed evil

Both spoke of their coming glory

Both were rejected by their brothers

Both were concerned about their brother’s welfare

Both were sent by their father

JESUS & JOSEPH

Both had brothers who weren’t where they should be

Both searched for their brothers

Both were treated badly by their brothers

Both were stripped of their coats

Both were “thrown into a pit”

Both were sold to the Gentiles

Both were sold by Judah (Judas)

Both were sold for the price of a slave

Both had brothers who were hypocritical

Both had their blood presented to their father

JESUS & JOSEPH

Both were brought to Egypt while young

Both became servants

Both were tempted to sin

Both overcame temptation

Both were falsely accused

Both were condemned with 2 criminals

The criminals had 2 different and opposite fates

Both asked someone to “remember” them

JESUS & JOSEPH

Both exchanged their “prison clothes” for “fine clothes”

Both were humbled

Both were subsequently exalted

Both became rulers

Both were “saviours”

Both had brothers who would eventually bow to them

But amazingly there are still more analogies between Jesus and Joseph.

JESUS & JOSEPH

Joseph was 30 years old when he came to greatness and received power to rule.

Gen 41:46 Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt…

30 YEARS OLD

Luke 3:23 Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry…

Joseph was filled with the Spirit of God (Gen 41:38).

FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?

Jesus was filled with the Spirit of God (Luke 4:18).

The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me

to preach good news to the poor.

Joseph suffered first at the hands of his brothers (thrown into a pit and sold as slave), then at the hands of the Gentiles (the Egyptians enslaved him, then imprisoned him).

JEWS & GENTILES

Jesus was handed over by his brothers (the Jews) to be crucified and suffer at the hands of the Gentiles (Romans).

JEWS & GENTILES

But ultimately the sinner pays the greatest penalty. Eventually the sin of Joseph’s brothers hurt them even more than it did Joseph. They had a famine, were falsely accused in Egypt and then had their sin exposed to their father.

Num 32:23 … and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.

THE SINNER’S PENALTY

The Jews also suffered because of their sin against Jesus.

Matt 27:24-25 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd.

I am innocent of this man’s blood. It is your responsibility!

Let his blood be on us and on our children!

This was fulfilled less than four decades later when Jerusalem was destroyed by the Roman armies of Titus, as predicted by Jesus.

Luke 23:27-30 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. For the time will come when you will say, “Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!” Then they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!”’

Joseph cared for his fellow prisoners. We read that Pharaoh put his two officials “… in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined. The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them” (Gen 40:2-4).

CARED FOR FELLOW PRISONERS

Jesus cared for his fellow prisoners.

Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.

Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

Joseph fed his brothers and their families when they were experiencing a famine.

Gen 42:25 Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put each man's silver back in his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey.

PROVISION FOR BROTHERS

Jesus is the bread of life (John 6:35), gives us living water (John 4:10), and he feeds us spiritually.

I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

Joseph made provision for his brothers while they were in a strange land.

STRANGE LAND

Gen 42:25 Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put each man’s silver back in his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey.

Jesus has made provision for us while we are strangers in a foreign land.

We are strangers in this world:

Heb 11:13b And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.

Through Jesus, God supplies our needs:

Phil 4:19 And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (NASB)

STRANGE LAND

Joseph had unlimited resources to meet the need of all the people:

Gen 41:49 Joseph stored up huge quantities of grain, like the sand of the sea; it was so much that he stopped keeping records because it was beyond measure.

UNLIMITED RESOURCES

Jesus has unlimited resources to meet our needs:

Eph 3:8 … to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ

UNLIMITED RESOURCES

Joseph tested people to reveal their true nature. He had his golden cup planted in Benjamin’s sack (Gen 44) to see how his brothers would react when Benjamin was falsely accused. The brothers showed that they had changed when Judah jumped to Benjamin’s defence and offered to take his punishment – this out of concern for his father.

TESTED PEOPLE

By his response, Judah (who years ago had been the one to suggest that Joseph be sold as a slave) demonstrates true repentance (a changed life).

Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father… Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come upon my father.

Jesus also tested people to reveal their true nature.

John 6:5-6 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

Eight months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!

Jesus also tested his enemies to reveal their true nature.

I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me! (Mark 11:29-30)

The chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders refrain from answering, because they are afraid of losing favour with the people, who held that John was a prophet.

… on the vine were 3 branches… I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand. (Gen 40:10-11)

In prison, the chief butler related his dream to Joseph.

Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand…

Joseph interpreted the chief butler’s dream showing that he would be restored to his former position in 3 days.

RAISED IN 3 DAYS

Jesus went to go to the grave and was raised after 3 days and then restored to his former glory (Luke 24:21,26).

Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?

And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.

Joseph was not initially recognized by his own brothers.

NOT RECOGNIZED

Gen 42:8 Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.

Jesus was not initially recognized by his own brothers – the Jews (John 19:15).

REJECTED BY BROTHERS

John 1:11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

We have no king but Caesar.

Shall I crucify your king?

But Joseph was eventually recognized by his brothers (Gen 45:4).

RECOGNITION

I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt!

Jesus will eventually be recognized by his own brothers.

Zech 12:10 And I will pour out on… the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child…

RECOGNITION

Joseph lived under God’s blessing:

The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered (Gen 39:2).

Note that this was while Joseph was still a slave. So he was blessed even in adversity.

BLESSED BY GOD

And when the adversity increases, Joseph remains blessed:

Gen 39:20-23 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison… But… the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favour in the eyes of the prison warden. So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there… the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

BLESSED IN ADVERSITY

Jesus lived under God’s blessing:

Luke 2:52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men.

Jesus was still blessed and not abandoned by God even in his ultimate adversity - death:

Acts 2:23-33 “… this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him, ‘… For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.’ … he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God

BLESSED IN ADVERSITY

So too in the face of trial and adversity, we remember that we still have God’s favour:

2 Cor 4:7-12 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all- surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

BLESSED IN ADVERSITY

2 Cor 4:13-18 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

BLESSED IN ADVERSITY

Those who associated with Joseph were also blessed by God:

Gen 39:5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.

OTHERS BLESSED BY GOD

Those who associated with Jesus are also blessed by God with spiritual blessings:

Eph 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

John 1:16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.

Gal 3:13-14 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

OTHERS BLESSED BY GOD

God delivered Joseph when he was unfairly treated:

Acts 7:9-10 Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him and rescued him from all his troubles.

RESCUED BY GOD

God delivered Jesus when he was unfairly treated:

Acts 2:36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

God gave Joseph wisdom:

Acts 7:10 He (God) gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh…

Jesus has all wisdom:

Col 2:2-3 … the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

WISDOM

Joseph is humble and attributes his gifting to God (Gen 41:15-16).

I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.

I cannot do it, but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.

HUMBLE

Joseph remained humble and unspoiled by wealth. All of the power given to him was used only for good. He attributed his success to God’s providence (Gen 45:8).

HUMBLE IN GREATNESS

So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.

Jesus too was a humble king (John 13:14).

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.

Joseph wept over his brothers.

Gen 45:14-15 Then he threw his arms around his

WEPT OVER BROTHERS

brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping. And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them…

Jesus also wept over his brothers:

Luke 19:41-42 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it

If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.

GOOD FOR EVIL

Joseph returned good for evil. He returns the money his brothers used to buy grain. When Jacob dies, Joseph tells them: “So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them. (Gen 50: 20-21)

Jesus also returned good for evil.

Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

Joseph forgave his brothers for their sins against him.

FORGIVENESS

Jesus forgave his brothers their sins against him as well.

Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. (Luke 23:34)

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

Joseph’s brothers intended evil when they sold him into slavery, but God used it for good.

GOOD FROM EVIL

God used the terrible event of Jesus being crucified to bring about the greatest good – our salvation.

God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. (Acts 2:36)

Joseph is seen as the Revealer of secrets (Gen 41:15)

I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.

Jesus Christ reveals secrets. After Jesus appeared to him on Patmos, John writes in Revelation 1:1:

REVEALER OF SECRETS

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place.

Joseph is portrayed as a counsellor who advises Pharaoh:

Gen 41:38-39 So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?” Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you.”

Jesus is called the “Wonderful Counsellor” (Isa 9:6) and is known as the one “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

Col 2:2-3 … so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

WONDERFUL COUSELLOR

Joseph was eventually reunited with his father.

Gen 46:29 Joseph had his chariot made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time.

REUNITED WITH FATHER

Go instead to my brothers and tell them, “I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”

Jesus was reunited with his father (John 20:17)

Joseph became royalty (Gen 45:8).

ROYALTY

So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.

Jesus has been exalted to be the “king of kings”:

Rev 19:16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: king of kings and lord of lords.

Joseph interceded for his brothers before Pharaoh.

I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, 'My brothers and my father's household, who were living in the land of Canaan, have come to me.’ (Gen 46:31)

INTERCESSION

Jesus also intercedes on our behalf to his Father.

Rom 8:34 Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus… is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Joseph received a new name from Pharaoh:

Gen 41:45 Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath- Paneah…

God gave Jesus a new name:

Phil 2:9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name…

A NEW NAME

Joseph warned of a coming danger, and urged his hearers to make provision to meet it (Gen 41:30-36).

COMING DANGER

This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.

Jesus Christ warned us to prepare for the coming judgement (Luke 13:3).

But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

Pharaoh had two disturbing dreams in the same night (Gen 41).

PHARAOH’S DREAMS

Gen 41:8 In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.

Then the chief cupbearer remembered Joseph and tells Pharaoh how he had interpreted his and the chief baker’s dreams.

Now a young Hebrew was there with us… We told him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us… (Gen 41:12-13)

Joseph was brought to Pharaoh to interpret the dreams.

In Pharaoh’s first dream there were 7 fat cows and 7 thin cows. The thin cows ate up the fat cows.

In his second dream there were 7 fat ears of corn that were eaten up by the skinny ears of corn.

Joseph interpreted this to mean that there would be 7 years of plenty and then 7 years of famine in the land.

7 YEARS

Jesus predicted a tribulation on the earth in the last days.

Matt 24:21 (NASB) “For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will.”

We know from the book of Revelation and Daniel 9:27 that this is a period of 7 years.

The 7 years famine are a type of the future Tribulation coming to the whole earth.

Joseph was given a Gentile bride by Pharaoh.

Gen 41:45 Pharaoh gave Joseph… Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife.

GENTILE BRIDE

The church is the bride of Christ.

2 Cor 11:2 … I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.

Jesus will be coming back for his bride in the Rapture. And since as in large the Jewish nation still has not accepted Jesus as Messiah - just as Joseph took a Gentile bride, the bride Jesus comes back for will consist mainly of Gentiles.

Rom 11:25 … Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in…

Joseph waited in prison for two years (Gen 41:1) before he was released to power and got his bride.

WAITING FOR A BRIDE

Jesus waits in heaven for 2 millennia before he comes in power and glory to receive his bride.

Rev 19:7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.

2 Pet 3:8-10 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief…

WAITING FOR A BRIDE

Interestingly Joseph received his Gentile bride just before the first set of 7 years began on earth.

BRIDE BEFORE 7 YEARS

The Pre-tribulation Rapture view holds that Jesus will also receive his Gentile bride, the church, just before the 7 year tribulation begins.

PRETRIBU-LATION RAPTURE

Jacob accepted Joseph’s Gentile sons as his own.

Gen 48:3-5 Jacob said to Joseph, “Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.”

GENTILE SONS ACCEPTED

“Jacob Blessing Ephraim and Manasseh” by Benjamin West

Likewise God accepts the Gentile “sons” in the church of Jesus as heirs:

Eph 3:6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Rom 15:15-16… because of the grace God gave me to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

GENTILE SONS ACCEPTED

As Gentiles, we have been accepted by God as his sons.

Eph 2:11-19 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth … remember that at that time you were separate from Christ… Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household

In faith that one day God would take the Israelites back to the promised land, Joseph made his brothers vow to take his bones to Canaan. (Gen 50:24-25)

THE PROMISED LAND

Gen 50:24-25 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” And Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.”

Heb 11:22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions about his bones.

THE PROMISED LAND

The resurrected Jesus went alive to our promised land and in faith we believe his promise to take us there.

My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (John 14:2-3)

Joseph warns his brothers against quarrelling as they travel to and from Egypt:

Gen 45:24 Then he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them, “Don’t quarrel on the way!”

The Bible warns us against quarrelling on our ‘journey’:

Titus 3:9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless

2 Tim 2:23-25 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth…

NO QUARRELLING

Joseph was believed to be dead (Gen 37:33).

BELIEVED DEAD

It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.

Believed to be dead, Joseph was actually alive (Gen 45:25).

Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of all Egypt.

Jesus was also believed to be dead (Luke 24:19-21).

Jesus of Nazareth… was a prophet, powerful in word and deed… The chief priests and our rulers … crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.

Though believed dead, Jesus was alive (Luke 24:30-32).

There came a day when Joseph’s brothers had to bow to him.

BOW DOWN

Joseph’s brothers were angry when he foretold that one day they would have to bow down to him. Some wanted to kill him and others thought that by selling him into slavery they had thwarted any fulfilment of his dreams forever.

But there came a day when they had to bow the knee to Joseph as the ruler in Egypt, who was the only one who could supply their desperate need during the famine.

Today there are those who refuse to acknowledge Jesus as Lord of their life. They try to silence his voice and scoff at the thought of being subservient to him. But whether they choose to serve him in this life or not, the day will come when they will have to bow before him and confess him as Lord.

BOW THE KNEE

Even those who reject Jesus now, will ultimately have to bow the knee to him.

Phil 2:10-11 … that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

HE IS LORD, HE IS LORD HE HAS RISEN FROM THE DEAD AND HE IS LORD EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW EVERY TONGUE CONFESS THAT JESUS CHRIST IS LORD
