Ken-Paynter/One-Lord-One-Faith-One-Baptism-Part1.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism - Part 2

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 19 May 2019

Topic Groups: HERMENEUTICS, SOUND DOCTRINE, BIBLE

Sermon synopsis: Doctrine and Unity are both important.

Ephesians 4:2-3 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

2 Timothy 2:15-19 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Ken-Paynter/False-prophets-and-fake-Christianity.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: False prophets and fake Christianity

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 10 March 2019

Topic Groups: HERESY, FALSE RELIGION, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Matthew 24:24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

South Africa has in recent months seen an increase in pastors and prophets who claimed they could heal or instantly create wealth for congregants using illegal means. The rogue churches have been widely criticized for robbing the poor and vulnerable while church leaders lived in luxury. Ashoms, a Nigerian national, said some of his fellow countrymen were guilty of using religion to make money in South Africa. I know some of them do that and I do tell them. We have seen the great commercialization of Christianity, where congregants have pay for a prayer, water, oil. So they merchandise everything in churches, that is business and nothing else.

Gavin-Paynter/Should-Christians-celebrate-Christmas-Part1.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Should Christians celebrate Christmas - Part 1

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 20 January 2019

Topic Groups: CHRISTMAS, SOUND DOCTRINE, HERESY

Sermon synopsis: Some feel that it is unimportant (or even sinful) to celebrate Christ’s birthday at all. The argument used by anti-Christmas proponents is normally:

- The Bible is silent on the date of Jesus birth. The December 25th date of Christmas and the many associated customs all come from pagan sources. All Christmas celebrations are therefore pagan.

Is this a valid argument?

Gavin-Paynter/The-seeker-sensitive-church.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The seeker sensitive church

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 10 June 2018

Topic Groups: PROSPERITY, THE CHURCH, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Describing the last days, Paul warns in 2 Tim 3:1-5:

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

Ken-Paynter/Truth-and-deception.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Truth and deception

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 8 October 2017

Topic Groups: SOUND DOCTRINE, HERESY

Sermon synopsis: Any Christian who is not on their guard can be deceived.

2 Cor 11:3-4 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

Gavin-Paynter/Calvinism-Part6a-The-atonement.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Calvinism-Part6b-The-atonement

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 9 April 2017

Topic Groups: ATONEMENT, HERESY, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: There are different models or Atonement theories. Some of these views are not necessarily mutually exclusive and are simply equally valid images of the same event.

One reason for the various views is that the Bible reveals many truths about the atonement and it is hard, if not impossible, to find any single “theory” that fully encapsulates or explains the richness of Christ’s work of redemption. The Scriptures present a rich and multifaceted picture of our redemption, putting forth many interrelated truths concerning the atonement.

But any view that ignores man’s sinfulness, the substitutionary nature of the atonement, or the centrality and significance of the cross - is deficient at best and heretical at worst.

Gavin-Paynter/Statement-of-faith-Part1.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Statement of faith - Part 2

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 20 November 2016

Topic Groups: SOUND DOCTRINE, STUDY, HERESY

Sermon synopsis: A brief overview of our Statement of Faith.

Gavin-Paynter/Statement-of-faith-Part1.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Statement of faith - Part 1

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 2 October 2016

Topic Groups: SOUND DOCTRINE, ETERNAL SECURITY, FIVE SOLAS

Sermon synopsis: Part 1 of our Statement of Faith including the Five Solas, the nature of God the Father in terms of his attributes and concerning the Trinity and creation. A look at Jesus Christ as the eternal Son of God, as to his virgin birth, his deity, humanity, sinless life, his miracles, death, resurrection and ascension. Finally a look at Salvation in terms of the Fall, original sin, unlimited atonement, Biblical predestination according to God's foreknowledge, election in the light of man's free will, redemption, the new birth, resistible grace, the evidence of salvation, and finally the rejection of Eternal Security.

Gavin-Paynter/Christ-and-him-crucified.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Christ and him crucified

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 12 June 2016

Topic Groups: EASTER, CRUCIFIXION, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Some ministry inspired by a recent trip to Athens.

The crucifixion of Jesus is a pivotal truth of the Christian gospel. In fact, it is crucial to the gospel, the crux of the message, if we might employ additional English words derived from the Latin word crux, from which we also derive the English word “cross.”

In writing to the Corinthians, Paul seems to express regret in the way he preached in Athens when he writes:

1 Cor 2:1-2 When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Gavin-Paynter/Empty-promises.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Empty promises

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 27 March 2016

Topic Groups: EASTER, RESURRECTION, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Facebook (which is of course the ultimate source for research) proclaims the following ‘truth’ about Easter:

Easter was originally the celebration of Ishtar, the Assyrian and Babylonian goddess of fertility and sex. Her symbols (like the egg and bunny) were and still are fertility and sex symbols (or did you actually think eggs and bunnies had anything to do with the resurrection?) After Constantine decided to Christianize the Empire, Easter was changed to represent Jesus. But at its roots, Easter (which is how you pronounce Ishtar) is all about celebrating fertility and sex.

The above post appeared on the Facebook feed of notorious atheist Richard Dawkins’ Foundation for Reason and Science. Similar claims are made on some Christian websites.

As a result some English Christians dislike using the term ‘Easter’ as the name is supposedly derived from pagan origins. They prefer to talk of Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday.

The argument largely rests on the supposed pagan associations of the English and German names for the celebration (‘Easter’ in English and ‘Ostern’ in German). But in most other European languages, the name for the celebration is derived from the Greek word ‘Pascha’, which comes from ‘pesach’, the Hebrew word for Passover. Easter is the Christian Passover festival, because the New testament records that Jesus was crucified at the time of the Passover (John 19:14) and was called “our Passover Lamb” (1 Cor 5:7).

Gavin-Paynter/Why-pastors-should-teach-on-the-Baptism-in-the-Holy-Spirit.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Why pastors should teach on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Pentecost

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 16 May 2015

Topic Groups: PENTECOST, HOLY SPIRIT, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: There are 3 different Greek prepositions that describe our relationship with the Holy Spirit – ‘para’, ‘en’ and ‘epi.’
1) PARA (WITH YOU) - The Holy Spirit is with a person, even prior to conversion. He convicts them of sin, righteousness and judgement to come (John 16:7-9) - and convinces them that Jesus is the Saviour.
2) EN (IN YOU) - When anyone calls on God to be saved, the Holy Spirit then comes INTO that person’s life.
1 Cor 6:19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in (EN) you.
3) EPI (UPON YOU) - But there is a third relationship that a believer can have which is separate and distinct from the first two. In Acts 1:8 Jesus promised “… but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon (EPI) you” (NASB)
Pentecostals maintain that the EPI experience (baptism in the Holy Spirit) is a unique experience, which is distinct from the EN experience (salvation).

Gavin-Paynter/Celebrity-Christianity.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Celebrity Christianity

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 28 September 2014

Topic Groups: SOUND DOCTRINE, SUCCESS, PROSPERITY

Sermon synopsis: A seeker-sensitive church tries to reach out to the unsaved by making the church experience as comfortable and non-threatening as possible. In effect these churches try to remove everything that may offend or turn away ‘seekers’ (formerly known as sinners or unbelievers). The focus is mainly on church numerical growth and the belief that a successful church depends primarily upon the staff’s ability to professionally and seamlessly conduct the meetings - rather than the presence of God. The 45-minute Bible-based sermon is replaced with a 20-minute motivational “feel-good” talk focused on self-improvement. It is aimed at addressing the “felt needs” of the congregation while continually stressing that being a Christian will dramatically improve your happiness and quality of life both at home and work.

Certain topics are avoided in order not to offend the big givers. Songs are eliminated from the worship which speak of man’s sinfulness, the cross or the need of a Saviour. Proponents say that the reason behind all the expense, state-of-the-art tech equipment, and the theatrics is in order to better reach the unsaved with the gospel. But it is questionable if it is the gospel that is being preached. God’s holiness, wrath and justice are not mentioned; only his love. Rarely if ever are sin, hell, or repentance spoken of, and Jesus as the exclusive way of salvation won’t be mentioned. Such topics are considered too “divisive.”

The focus of a seeker church in reality is totally man-centred. Actually we should have God-sensitive churches, not seeker-sensitive.

Gavin-Paynter/Self-esteem-and-positive-affirmation-gospel.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Self esteem and positive affirmation gospel

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 14 September 2014

Topic Groups: SELF ESTEEM, SOUND DOCTRINE, PROSPERITY

Sermon synopsis: If I were to tell you:

Start your day by declaring, “I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.”

you may be tempted to think that this was a quote from an email or SMS encouraging Christians to make daily positive affirmations about themselves – which will then be fulfilled the more they say it.
In fact that is a passage of Scripture. But where is it from and what is the context?

Ken-Paynter/20130721_Generational-curses.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Generational and bloodline curses

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 21 July 2013

Topic Groups: GENERATIONAL CURSES, SOUND DOCTRINE, HERESY

Sermon synopsis: Let us now look at blood line curses and generational curses.
Deuteronomy 5:9. is where the root of this issue starts and it’s also mentioned in Exodus 20.
Both of these are accounts of the Ten commandments being given.
Deuteronomy 5:9.
“visiting the iniquities of the father upon the children until the third and fourth generation of those who hate me”
What is overlooked in this passage of Scripture is the fact that it is visited upon those that hate God. An iniquity is a sin that shows up at a later stage.
Isaiah 53:5. says that Jesus was “bruised for our iniquities”
A bruise does not show up straight away. Somebody can hit you on the arm and you will look at your arm and you won’t see anything. It may hurt, but you won’t see anything. The next day you will notice that you have a bruise there and that is what iniquity is. It’s a sin that’s in your family, that if you do not serve the Lord, will almost surely show up in your own life.

Ken-Paynter/20131407_Counterfeit-Christianity.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Counterfeit Christianity

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 14 July 2013

Topic Groups: SOUND DOCTRINE, HERESY, SELF ESTEEM

Sermon synopsis: Galatians 3:6-10 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. Des-Burrows/20121111_False-Christianity.png

SERMON TOPIC: False Christianity

Speaker: Des Burrows

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 11 November 2012

Topic Groups: SOUND DOCTRINE, HERESY

Sermon synopsis: Jeremiah 7:2-3 (NIV)
“‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord. 3 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
Verse 5 - If you really change your ways and your actions.
Verse 11 - But I have been watching! declares the Lord.
Verse 13 - I spoke to you again and again, but you did not listen; I called you, but you did not answer.
Verse 15 - I will thrust you from my presence
Verse 19 - But am I the one they are provoking declares the Lord.
Verse 23 – but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you.

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 7 October 2012

Topic Groups: KING JAMES ONLY, THE BIBLE, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Last time we looked at the importance of being able to understand the Bible you read.
In this study we will focus on some of the criticisms levelled by King James Only adherents at the new English translations.

SERMON TOPIC: Which Bible version should we use - Part 1

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 12 August 2012

Topic Groups: KING JAMES ONLY, THE BIBLE, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: A brief look at the King James Only controversy.
Also what criteria do you use when choosing a Bible?
1) UNDERSTANDABILITY
- Translation method
- Use of modern or simple English
2) ACCURACY
- Translation method
- Textual source
In this study we will focus on the first criteria – understandability.

Johnray-Rennie/20120513_Heresy-and-how-it-affects-us.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Heresy and how it affects us

Speaker: Johnray Rennie

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 13 May 2012

Topic Groups: HERESY, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Matt 7:15 'Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.'

Ezek 3:17 'Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.'

Gavin-Paynter/20111211_Should-Christians-observe-Christmas.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Should Christians celebrate Christmas

Speaker: Gavin Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 11 December 2011

Topic Groups: CHRISTMAS, SOUND DOCTRINE, HERESY

Sermon synopsis: Some feel that it is unimportant (or even sinful) to celebrate Christ’s birthday at all.
The arguments used by anti-Christmas proponents are normally:
- The Bible is silent on the date of Jesus birth.
- The December 25th date of Christmas and the many associated customs all come from pagan sources.
All Christmas celebrations are therefore pagan.
- Christians never observed Christmas until the 4th century.
Therefore it must have been the emperor Constantine or 'some pope' who introduced the festival as a form of honour to the sun god.
There is no instruction or precedent in the Bible to celebrate Jesus' birth.

Ken-Paynter/Ken-Paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Deception - Exchanging the truth for a lie

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 26 September 2011

Topic Groups: SOUND DOCTRINE, HERESY

Sermon synopsis: Rom 1:25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator - who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. 28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.

Ken-Paynter/Ken-Paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Miracles, Signs, Wonders and Healing

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 26 September 2011

Topic Groups: SOUND DOCTRINE, HERESY

Sermon synopsis: While the Scriptures teach about miracles, signs and wonders they must be kept in perspective.
The cross must always be foremost because signs and wonders don't change hard hearts.
An overemphasis on the miraculous is a sign of spiritual immaturity.
Luke 10:17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, 'Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.'
18 He replied, 'I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.'

Ken-Paynter/20110605_The-Bible-Part4_What-are-you-doing-with-the-Bible.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The Bible - Part 4 - What are you doing with the Bible

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 5 June 2011

Topic Groups: THE BIBLE, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Are you using the Bible to try get God to do what you want?
In Matthew 4:5-6 we see that this type of manipulation is not new. Satan used it in his temptation of Jesus in the wilderness when he said 'it is written'. Are you using the “it is written” line on God?

Ken-Paynter/Ken-Paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Generational Curses

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 23 November 2008

Topic Groups: GENERATIONAL CURSES, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Does God curse us for the sins of our fathers? Do Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians also have Biblically unfounded superstitions?

Ken-Paynter/Ken-Paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The power of Tradition

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 27 January 2008

Topic Groups: TRADITION, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: John 4:19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” 21 Jesus declared, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”

Ken-Paynter/20110212_AGF_Who-are-you-What-are-you-doing.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Who are you - Part 5

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 19 August 2007

Topic Groups: DESTINY, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Who are you? Is your Christianity real or are you a hypocrite? Have you got the real thing or have you settled for a cheap imitation?

Ken-Paynter/Ken-Paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Signs and miracles

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 5 July 1998

Topic Groups: HOLY SPIRIT, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Are signs and wonders the most important thing for the church to pursue?

1 Cor 1: 22 Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Leston-Blackburn/Leston-Blackburn.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Battling the billows

Speaker: Leston Blackburn

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 21 May 1995

Topic Groups: SOUND DOCTRINE, HERESY

Sermon synopsis: We’ve seen such a flood of false doctrine coming into the Church that sometimes Christians battle to discern between truth and error.
How do we battle these winds of doctrine that sweep through the church?

Eph 4:11 'It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.'

SERMON TOPIC: Winds of doctrine: The Toronto blessing

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 14 May 1995

Topic Groups: HERESY, SOUND DOCTRINE

Sermon synopsis: Doctrine is important - but you can have the right doctrine and the wrong spirit. Many attempts to correct doctrine are done in an obnoxious and sarcastic manner. This is a look at ‘The Toronto Blessing’ from a Biblical perspective, but done in the spirit of love.

The Charismatic movement has at times emphasized experience at the expense of Scripture.
We need to be teachable, but not gullible.

1 Thess 5:21 “Test everything. Hold on to the good.”

Ken-Paynter/ken-paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: Beware of false doctrines

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 19 September 1993

Topic Groups: SOUND DOCTRINE, HERESY

Sermon synopsis: Titus 1:6 An elder
... must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
