SERMON TOPIC: Building the Church - Part 3

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 12 December 2016

Topic Groups: THE CHURCH, GIFTS OF SPIRIT

Sermon synopsis: What is the Church? Many people today understand the church as a building. This is not Biblical . The word “church” comes from the Greek word ekklesia which is defined as “an assembly” or “called-out ones.”
It cost Jesus everything and He gave this warning.

Luke 14:25-33 Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.........
In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples....

Sermon synopsis: Many people today understand the church as a building.
his is not a biblical understanding of the church. The word “church” comes from the Greek word ekklesia which is defined as “an assembly” or “called-out ones.” The root meaning of “church” is not that of a building, but of people. It is ironic that when you ask people what church they attend, they usually identify a building.
Romans 16:5 Greet the church that is in their house. Paul refers to the church in their house, not a church building, but a body of believers.

SERMON TOPIC: The Body of Christ

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 1 December 2013

Topic Groups: THE CHURCH, GIFTS OF SPIRIT, HOLY SPIRIT

Sermon synopsis: Ephesians 4:11-16 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

SERMON TOPIC: Faith

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 3 October 2010

Topic Groups: FAITH, GIFTS OF SPIRIT

Sermon synopsis: There is a misperception that if you have enough faith, nothing bad will ever happen to you.
When her brother Lazarus had died, Martha said to Jesus, 'If you had been here, my brother would not have died.' (John 11:21)
So many believe that if Jesus is there – nothing bad ever happens.
Some people want Christianity because of false promises made from the pulpit.
Peter died a martyr’s death. Why? Because he lost his faith? No, because he kept his faith.

SERMON TOPIC: Service

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 14 March 2010

Topic Groups: SERVICE, GIFTS OF SPIRIT

Sermon synopsis: Ministry simply put – is servanthood.
Philippians 1:1 Paul and Timothy, SERVANTS of Christ Jesus…
2 Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a SERVANT and apostle of Jesus Christ…
James 1:1 James, a SERVANT of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ…
Jude 1 Jude, a SERVANT of Jesus Christ…

Phil 2:5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7 but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a SERVANT,
being made in human likeness.

John 13:12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

SERMON TOPIC: Faith

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 12 March 2000

Topic Groups: FAITH, GIFTS OF SPIRIT

Sermon synopsis: Faith is complete trust or confidence – belief without logical proof.

John 20:24 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

SERMON TOPIC: The teacher

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 24 October 1999

Topic Groups: HOLY SPIRIT, GIFTS OF SPIRIT

Sermon synopsis: Eph 4:11-13 “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

We must be teachable, but not gullible.

The evangelist looks at the congregation and sees empty chairs -
The pastor looks at the congregation and sees empty hearts -
The teacher looks at the congregation and sees empty heads.

It’s pointless just leading someone to Christ and then leaving them – they need to be discipled and taught – or they will fall away.

A theologian takes the simple truths of God’s Word and makes them so profound that ordinary people don’t understand them -
A teacher takes the profound truths of God’s Word and makes them so simple that ordinary people can understand them.

Studying error is unedifying – but false teaching must be dealt with.

3 dangers exist:
(1) Intellectualism
(2) Emotionalism
(3) Decision-ism.

SERMON TOPIC: Gifts of the Spirit

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 2 May 1999

Topic Groups: GIFTS OF SPIRIT, HOLY SPIRIT

Sermon synopsis: 1 Cor 12:4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

SERMON TOPIC: God's Times and Seasons

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 12 January 1997

Topic Groups: HOLY SPIRIT, GIFTS OF SPIRIT

Sermon synopsis: Mark 16:17 'And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.'

Ken-Paynter/ken-paynter.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The body of Christ

Speaker: Ken Paynter

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 31 March 1996

Topic Groups: THE CHURCH, GIFTS OF SPIRIT

Sermon synopsis: Rom 12:4 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

James-Mullan/James-Mullan.jpg

SERMON TOPIC: The gift ministries of the ascended Christ

Speaker: James Mullan

Language: ENGLISH

Date: 1 October 1971

Topic Groups: HOLY SPIRIT, GIFTS OF SPIRIT

Sermon synopsis: James Mullan believed that, besides the leadership role of elders and deacons in the local assembly, the apostolic founder of the church also had a part to play in the leadership (as Paul did with the churches he planted). This teaching outlays his views on the subject.

It must be mentioned that in contrast the assemblies on the Rand (now called Gauteng), with their ideas of church government more influenced by Fred Mullan, remained autonomous but affiliated to the FIAM (later the AGF). Fred had believed in the autonomy of each assembly and that the church government should reside solely with the local oversight of elders and deacons, rather than having any accountability to the apostolic founder of the church. Due to the misuse of the title 'apostle' in certain circles, the Independent assemblies were generally reticent to use the term and some felt that the ministry of apostle had ceased after the 1st century church.
