We read in Daniel 9:27
In a week he shall make the covenant to prevail for many, and in the middle of the week he will cause offering and sacrifice to cease. Then on a wing of horrors shall a desolator come to bring ruin until a fully determined end comes down on the desolation. (Modern Lang. Bible)
He shall make a firm league with the mighty (many) for one week; and, the week half spent, he shall put a stop to sacrifice and offering. And in the train of these abominations shall come an author of desolation; then, in the end, what has been decreed concerning the desolation will be poured out. (NEB)
He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven', but in the middle of that 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And one who causes desolation will place abominations on a wing (of the temple) (or will come on the wings of abominations) until the end that is decreed is poured out on him. (NIV)
And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations (detestable things) will come one who makes desolate (causes horror), even until a great destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate (causes horror). (NASB)
And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week; and for half of the week he shall cause sacrifice and offering to cease; and upon the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator. (RSV)
And in the middle of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease, and by the overspreading of idolatries he shall spread ruin, even until the end. And that which was decreed shall be poured on the desolate one. (King James II Version)
And he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and oblation to cease, and because of the protection of abominations (there shall be) a desolator, even until that the consumption and what is determined shall be poured out upon the desolate (or). And he shall enter into a strong and firm covenant with the many for one week (seven years) and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and offering to cease (for the remaining three and one-half years); and upon the wing or pinnacle of abominations (shall come) one who makes desolate; until the full determined end is poured out on the desolator. NOTES ON DANIEL'S PROPHECY OF SEVENTY SEVENS
FIRSTLY:
The SEVENTY SEVENS are 70 x 7 prophetic years. They are ALL 360 days in length. The EARTH'S year was very unstable from 747 B.C. until 687 B.C.
On March 23rd 687 B.C. the year changed permanently from exactly 360 days to 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds (365.2422 days). At this time the shadow on the SUNDIAL of AHAZ returned by 15 degrees. See 2 Kings 19:7, Isa 37:7. This involved a relocation of JERUSALEM from latitude 37 to latitude 32 degrees. (SUNDIAL OF AHAZ ... a pillar about 60 feet high).
JUDGEMENT OF THE SAINTS ... BEMA JUDGEMENT
Occurs during the 7 year Tribulation. Occupies 7 years of 360 days (See 2 Peter 3:8)
No. of Seconds = 60 x 60 x 24 x 360 x 7 Seconds
= 6 x 6 x 24 x 36 x 7 x 1000 Secs.
= 36 x 36 x 168
= 1296 x 168
= 217,728,000 Secs
How can the judgement take place? No time!!!
THE COMMANDMENT TO BUILD AND RESTORE JERUSALEM ... Dan 9:25
THERE WERE FOUR DECREES ISSUED BY THE PERSIAN KINGS:
1) The DECREE OF CYRUS (536 B.C.)?
This was only for the TEMPLE to be rebuilt and is recorded in 2 Chron. 36:22-23 and also Ezra 1:1-4 (First year of CYRUS).
2) The DECREEE OF DARIUS (519 B.C.) Hystaspes
The building of the TEMPLE had been halted by opposition. The decree of DARIUS confirmed that of CYRUS and the work was restarted. See Ezra 6:1-12.
3) The DECREE OF ARTAXERXES (456 B.C.)
This decree also dealt with the TEMPLE and other things which pertained to the ordering of the worship, so that even vessels from the king's treasure house were given. See Ezra 7:1-28.
4) THE SECOND DECREE OF ARTAXERXES (445 B.C.)
Given in the TWENTIETH year of the king. 446 B.C. (20th Year began July 446 B.C.) Commandment given in the month of NISAN 445 B.C. Neh. Ch 2. THIS IS THE COMMANDMENT TO REBUILD THE CITY OF JERUSALEM So the 490 years (70 Sevens) is to be calculated from the year 445 B.C.
THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION: Dan. 9:24-27
SEVENTY SEVENS are determined (decreed) upon:
A) THY PEOPLE and upon
B) THY HOLY CITY
- To finish transgression (FINISH ... KALA ... KAWLAW ... a prim. root meaning to RESTRICT).
- To make an end of sins.
- To make reconciliation for iniquity ... (The expression means "TO ATONE FOR BY SACRIFICE").
- To bring in everlasting righteousness.
- To seal up the vision and the prophecy. (CHATAM ... KHAW-THAM ... a prim. root to close up, esp. to seal: make an end, mark, stop.)
- And to anoint the most holy. (To anoint a most holy place. RSV = Anoint Holy of holies.)
KNOW THEREFORE AND UNDERSTAND:
From the going forth of the commandment to restore and rebuild JERUSALEM unto MESSIAH the PRINCE shall be SEVEN SEVENS, and SIXTY TWO SEVENS.
After SIXTY TWO SEVENS shall MESSIAH be CUT OFF but not for HIMSELF. (Hebraists agree on the rendering of "BUT NOT FOR HIMSELF" as being "AND SHALL HAVE NOTHING". HE shall not possess the KINGDOM or be the ACKNOWLEDGED KING. HE shall be deprived of everything ... Mill Bible.)
And the people of the PRINCE WHO SHALL COME (ANTICHRIST) will
destroy the CITY and the SANCTUARY. Its end shall come with a FLOOD, and even to
the end there shall be war, and desolations are decreed. Read Matt 24:6-14.
And HE (ANTICHRIST) will make a FIRM COVENANT with many for ONE SEVEN. See Isa 28:15-18.
In the MIDST of the WEEK (SEVEN) he shall cause the sacrifice and oblation (offering) to cease. (For the remainder of the 3½ years.)
And for
the overspreading of ABOMINATIONS he shall make it desolate. Matt 24:15, Mark
13:14. (Then on a WING OF HORRORS shall a DESOLATOR come to bring RUIN until a
FULLY DETERMINED END on the DESOLATOR ... NEB. A.R.S.V. reads, "On the wing of
ABOMINATIONS will come one who MAKES DESOLATE, even until a COMPLETE
DESTRUCTION, one that is DECREED, is poured out on the one who makes DESOLATE.")
CALCULATIONS ... SEVENTY SEVENS
Seventy Sevens is 70 x 7 = 490 years.
These are prophetic years of 360 days each.
Divided as follows:
7 Sevens = 7 x 7 = 49 years
62 Sevens = 62 x 7 = 434 years
One Seven = 1 x 7 = 7 years
TOTAL 490 years
49 Prophetic Years = 48 Normal Years
From 445 B.C. this brings up to 397 B.C.
Malachi ... Last O.T. writing prophet.
434 Prophetic Years = 428 Normal Years
(434 x 360 = 156 240 Days
156 240 Days ÷ 365.2422 = 476 Normal Years)
From 397 B.C. this brings us to 32 A.D.
(Present Year = 365 days, 5
hours, 48 minutes, 46 seconds = 365.2422 Years)
(N.B. Up to 747 B.C. Earth's
year was very unstable. On March 23rd 687 B.C. the year changed permanently from
a year of 360 days to a year of 365.2422 days.) See 2 Kings 20:8-11, Isaiah
38:8.
4 CYCLES OF 490 YEARS IN ISRAEL'S HISTORY
FIRST - FROM THE CALL OF ABRAHAM TO THE EXODUS
Abraham called when he dwelt in Haran.
He was 75 YEARS OLD at the
time. Gen 12:1-3.
This is the ABRAHAMIC COVENANT.
From this point to the giving
of the Law at Sinai was 430 years according to Gal 3:17.
Adding 75 to 430 we have 505 years.
But there was an interloper, ISHMAEL, for 15 years for he was
conceived when Abraham was 85 years old (Gen 16:16) and Abraham was 100 years
old when ISAAC was born (Gen 21:5).
So 505 - 15 = 490 years.
This is the FIRST
CYCLE of 490 years.
OTHER DATES OF IMPORTANCE
From the Covenant to the birth of
ISAAC was 25 years (Gen 12:1-3, 21:5).
From the birth of ISAAC to the birth of JACOB and ESAU was 60 years (Gen 25:26).
JACOB was 130 years old when he went to
EGYPT and 147 years old when he died (Gen 47:28).
The children of ISRAEL were to be afflicted for 400 years according to Gen 15:13 and Acts 7:6.
ISRAEL was to be
afflicted for FOUR GENERATIONS (Gen 15:13).
From the call of ABRAHAM (Gen 12:1-3) to the going down to EGYPT of JACOB (ISRAEL) (Gen 47:28) was 215 years.
So ISRAEL was in EGYPT for 185 years or FOUR GENERATIONS.
Note: ABRAHAM was the youngest son of TERAH. He was born when TERAH was 130 years old. (Other sons
of TERAH were NAHOR and HARAN. HARAN died at UR before TERAH removed his family
to the city of HARAN. Although ABRAHAM is mentioned first in Gen 11:27 as a son
of TERAH, this is because of his importance as chosen of GOD.) (See Gen
11:27-32)
SECOND - FROM THE EXODUS TO THE DEDICATION OF SOLOMON'S TEMPLE, 1005 B.C.
Wilderness Wanderings - 40 years (Deut 1:3, Acts 13:18)
Conquest of Canaan - 6 years (Joshua 14:7-10 Partition of Canaan 14 years Judges 11:26)
Period of Judges to Samuel - 450 years (Acts 13:20)
Reign of Saul - 40 years (Acts 13:21)
Reign of DAVID - 40 years (2 Samuel 5:4)
Commencement of SOLOMON'S reign to the Dedication of the TEMPLE - 11 years (1 Kings 6:37-38)
TOTAL length of time = 601 years
EXODUS - 480 years before 4th year of Solomon's reign - 1 Kings 6:7 This would
make the Exodus at 1606 B.C. Thus the birth of Abraham would be 1606 plus 505
years or 2111 B.C.
This 601 years is a far cry from the 490 cycle we are looking
for. But we see ISRAEL experiencing SIX servitudes during the period of the

From the Exodus to the Dedication of the Temple was 601 years.
Less the 111 years of Oppression we have: 601 - 111 = 490 years.
Thus we have another cycle of 490 years.
THIRD - FROM THE DEDICATION OF SOLOMON'S TEMPLE TO THE EDICT OF ARTAXERXES
The Dedication of Solomon's Temple took place in the year 1005 B.C.
The Edict of ARTAXERXES LONGIMANUS for the rebuilding of the streets and walls of JERUSALEM was made in the 20th year of his reign.
He began to reign in the year 465 B.C. and the EDICT was made in the year 445 B.C. (Neh 2:6-8). This gives us 1005 - 445 = 560 years.
But ISRAEL was carried away captive to BABYLON for 70 years (Jer 25:11-12, 29:10, Dan 9:2). Thus 560 - 70 = 490 years.
Thus we have the THIRD CYCLE of 490 years.
Note: Esther was married to XERXES who reigned from 485 B.C. to 465 B.C. when he was murdered by his vizier. (Persian ... KHSHAYARSHA). NEBUCHADNEZZAR, who carried the JEWS away into captivity began to reign in BABYLON in 604 B.C.
FOURTH - FROM THE EDICT OF ARTAXERXES TO THE REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST IN GLORY
SEVENTY SEVENS were determined upon the Jews from the EDICT of ARTAXERXES in 445 B.C.
7 x 7 or 49 years (of 360 days each) which will bring us to MALACHI in 397 B.C. From here there is prophetic silence till John the Baptiser.
We then have 62 x 7 or 434 years (of 360 days each which are calculated to be 428 Normal years.) Taking our datum point as 397 B.C. this brings us to 32 A.D. or the year in which CHRIST died for the sins of the world.
There is then a long period, of unknown duration, which we know to be the CHURCH AGE. This will be terminated by the RAPTURE, the time of this event being unknown.
Immediately after the RAPTURE the last 7 years, which complete this last 490 years cycle, will begin. When the 7 years have run their course, the LORD JESUS CHRIST will return to rule as KING of the EARTH (Zech 14:9) (See Daniel 9:24-27) This is the longest period in which ISRAEL is out of favour, as a nation. As individuals they, of course, are invited to receive JESUS CHRIST as their personal Saviour on the same basis as the GENTILES receive CHRIST as LORD.
